A man from Northern California is in custody facing murder charges following the alleged killing of another individual using a hatchet. David Swank Prince, 35, from Chico, was arrested on Saturday, 21 March 2023, in connection with the death of Christopher Jaber, 34, in Lafayette, Contra Costa County.

The incident took a disturbing turn when a relative of Jaber contacted emergency services to report a suspicious person with a hatchet on their property located on Westminster Place. According to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, the call drew attention to what appeared to be a break-in at Jaber’s residence. When police arrived at the scene, they found Jaber deceased at the property.

As officers initiated their investigation, they encountered Prince, who was found walking nearby and was subsequently detained. By the end of the night, he had been formally charged with murder, with the district attorney’s office indicating that the attack seemed premeditated.
Of particular concern are messages that emerged in February on a now-deleted Facebook account purportedly belonging to Prince. These messages included a post that seemingly targeted Jaber, with one stating, “Can someone please k*ll this man,” accompanied by the victim’s name and address. Another message ominously hinted at a need to end what the author called “the Chaos of the supernatural,” naming Jaber and again detailing his location. The connection between these posts and the murder remains under investigation, as authorities work to ascertain a possible motive.
The authorities maintain that while the act appears to be targeted, it is still unclear whether Prince and Jaber were acquainted prior to this incident. Both law enforcement and the district attorney’s office are continuing to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Prince is currently being held at the Martinez Detention Facility. He faces a bail of $1,030,000 and is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday, 25 March 2023. During this hearing, he may enter a plea to the murder charge, which also carries an enhancement due to the alleged use of a deadly weapon.
This shocking event not only left a community shaken, but it has also raised significant questions regarding the motivations behind such a violent act. Neighbours reported hearing shouting from within Jaber’s residence just before police arrived, hinting that a confrontation may have occurred.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone who may possess information relevant to the case to come forward. As this case progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding violent crime and the profound impact it has on victims’ families and the wider community. The investigation is ongoing, and more revelations may arise as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the circumstances leading to Jaber’s tragic death.
