An Austin-based bride has shared her distressing experience of how Botox treatments ahead of her destination wedding left her unable to smile as she had hoped. Marcella Santos, a 34-year-old stay-at-home mother, claims that the procedure, which was recommended to alleviate pain from cracked teeth, ultimately marred her wedding day in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Four weeks prior to her big day, Santos received 30 units of Botox in her jaw, prescribed by her dentist. Having undergone similar treatments before, she was confident in her decision. “I thought I would alleviate some discomfort and also reduce a few wrinkles,” she explained. However, two weeks after the injections, things took a turn for the worse as she noticed an unusual tightness in her jaw, which prevented her from smiling normally.

Describing her feelings leading up to the wedding, Santos recalled, “I felt like I was a marionette puppet, unable to express myself.” The pressure of the impending nuptials added to her anxiety, and no preparation seemed adequate to salvage her sense of self. “I’m usually quite bubbly and goofy; instead, I felt like I had taken on the perpetual expression of Mona Lisa,” she said.

On March 5, 2025, despite her concerns, Santos walked down the aisle. While the day itself was filled with joy, her insecurities lingered. “Though I loved my wedding day, I didn’t feel confident,” she confessed. “As the bride, when everyone is focused on you, I wanted to feel radiant.” The significant expenses associated with the wedding heightened her feelings of frustration, as she felt her enjoyment had been overshadowed by anxiety about her appearance.
A couple of months after the celebrations, Santos received her wedding photos and was devastated by the results. “All the details of the wedding were perfect,” she reflected, “but it’s a shame that this one thing had to ruin it.” The images left her feeling disheartened, and she described herself as looking “uninterested and bored,” a stark contrast to the happy memories she held of the event.
Determined to rectify what she felt were missed opportunities during her wedding day, Santos opted to retake some photographs one year later. With the family in tow, including her husband Cooper Ribb and their two-year-old son, Henry, she arranged for a special photoshoot, ensuring that her son wore a newly tailored suit for the occasion. “These photos won’t replace the originals, but they are for me,” she said, expressing relief at finally having images she was happy with.
Santos now wishes to use her experience as a cautionary tale for others considering cosmetic procedures. “I’m taking a break from injectables right now,” she stated, “but I want to warn people to seek informed consent and ask questions. You may not always be aware of the potential side effects.” Looking back, she emphasised, “Your wedding day is not the place to lose your smile.”
While her experience serves as a reminder of the importance of informed decision-making regarding cosmetic treatments, it also highlights the profound impact such choices can have on memory and self-image during significant life events. As Santos reflects on her journey, she hopes that others will learn from her story, avoiding the pitfalls she faced.
