A coroner’s court in Wiltshire has concluded its investigation into the tragic death of two-year-old Rufus Davies, who died after being struck by a family friend’s car in May 2025. The court found that the incident, which resulted in extensive head injuries for the young child, was categorized as “misadventure.”

Rufus Davies was visiting a friend’s home when the accident occurred, located near Marlborough, about 77 miles west of London. Reports indicate that Rufus had exited his mother Olivia Davies’ car and, while running towards the driveway, was hit by a reversing Porsche Macan driven by Tamsin Hayward, a family friend.
According to Olivia’s statement, the incident took place when she informed Rufus that Hayward had arrived. The excitement led him to escape from the car, running towards the driveway where Hayward was parked. “I opened the driver’s door and helped him down. He ran round the back of the car,” Olivia recalled. She initially believed that Hayward would park her car further away but did not anticipate the reversing movement that would soon lead to the tragedy.
As Olivia exited her vehicle, she was alerted by her daughter that Rufus had been struck by the car. “I then ran to the back of my car and saw Rufus lying on the floor,” she stated. Upon realising the severity of the situation, Hayward exited her vehicle and attempted to perform CPR on Rufus until emergency services arrived.
Tragically, medical responders pronounced Rufus dead at the scene, despite the immediate aid given. Hayward described her driving habits, stating that she always reverses onto her driveway cautiously. She acknowledged noticing Olivia and her daughter but did not see Rufus at the critical moment of impact. “I waved at them and said ‘hello’ as I drove in and had my driver’s window down,” she stated in her account.
In her recollection of events, Hayward maintained that her driveway appeared clear when she drove in. However, in a fleeting moment when she checked her mirrors, she felt her car roll over a bump, an indication that something had occurred. It was only then that she noticed Rufus lying on the ground and saw Olivia running towards her, visibly distraught.
The investigating officer, PC Alexander Way, confirmed that Hayward’s vehicle was functioning properly at the time of the incident and that she tested negative for substances. He described the event as an “extremely tragic incident with the most devastating of outcomes,” further complicating an already heart-wrenching situation for all involved.
Coroner’s Court recorded that Rufus died from a diffuse traumatic head injury, a consequence of being struck by a reversing vehicle. The court’s ruling stated that Rufus had exited his family’s car and inadvertently crossed into a blind spot. In a matter of seconds, he was struck by the rear of Hayward’s vehicle, resulting in his tragic death.
With the coroner classifying the incident as misadventure, it highlighted the unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances that can arise from everyday activities. This case serves as a devastating reminder of the importance of vigilant driving, especially in residential areas where children may be present. The Davies family are now left to navigate the aftermath of this heart-rending loss, as the community mourns the untimely passing of a young life full of potential.
