A tragic event unfolded in Lakeside, California, where a 40-year-old man was discovered deceased after going missing during a hike on El Cajon Mountain. The man had embarked on his trek early on March 21, 2023, but was reported missing by his family the following day when he failed to return home.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the hiker began his journey around 8 a.m. from a trailhead located on Blue Sky Ranch Road. Family members informed the authorities that he had successfully reached the summit of El Cajon Mountain prior to his disappearance. His absence raised immediate concern, prompting family members to seek help from law enforcement.
Rescue operations commenced on March 22, with volunteers and search teams mobilising to locate the missing hiker. His body was ultimately discovered around 7:30 p.m. local time that same day, near one of the trails east of the starting point. A volunteer stumbled upon the body in the brush, prompting a swift response from local authorities.
Lieutenant Viet Do from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office reported that once the body was located, investigators observed “no obvious signs of trauma.” However, he noted that the victim did exhibit some cuts and bruises on his body. It is believed that the hiker may have lost consciousness and subsequently fallen into the underbrush.
The search for the missing man saw the involvement of the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit, along with assistance from a helicopter from the Sheriff’s ASTREA unit. Lieutenant Do mentioned that approximately 60 to 70 volunteers came forward to aid in the search effort. He expressed the team’s deep regret that they could not reach the hiker in time, stating, “We tried our very best.”
Further investigation revealed that while the victim was physically fit, he was not particularly experienced in hiking. This detail has raised questions about the potential challenges he may have faced on the trail. On the day of his hike, temperatures soared into the mid-90s, a factor that could have contributed to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death.
Authorities have since transferred the remains of the deceased to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The coroner’s office will be responsible for positively identifying the victim as well as determining the official cause and manner of death.
