In a recent interview with GQ, the 56-year-old musician firmly asserted that he would rather “die” than settle such serious allegations. He described the potential for a settlement as against his principles, noting the emotional impact it would have had on his family, particularly his wife, Beyoncé. “Settling ain’t in my DNA,” he stated, emphasising the severity of the claims made against him and the weight of the situation on his loved ones.
The allegations, which involved accusations of drugging and assaulting a 13-year-old female at an afterparty for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, were filed by an anonymous woman. Jay-Z and Combs both categorically denied these allegations. According to Jay-Z, the lawsuit took a significant toll on him, invoking feelings of “uncontrollable anger.” He expressed frustration with what he perceives as a lack of accountability for making serious allegations without substantial evidence.
During the interview, Jay-Z reflected on how the rapid spread of allegations in the digital age often seems to lack adequate consideration for the consequences. He remarked, “You don’t put that on someone—that’s a thing that you better be super sure about.” This sentiment reflects a belief he has held since his youth, where he and his associates adhered to a code that protected women and children from harm.
