In a candid interview with *The Times*, Essiedu revealed that while he has cherished memories of the ‘Harry Potter’ universe from his childhood, the response to his new role has been anything but welcoming. He shared that he was an avid reader as a child, with books serving as a crucial escape during difficult times. “My mum couldn’t afford a babysitter in the holidays, so she would take me to the library,” he recounted. Though he never watched the films, the world depicted in J.K. Rowling’s books was pivotal to him during his formative years.
Tragically, the excitement of being a part of this beloved franchise has been marred by a surge of hate. Essiedu disclosed that he has received threats which range from disturbing to downright violent. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he described, highlighting the severity of the abuse he has encountered. The actor acknowledged that the pervasive negativity has affected those close to him, with friends and family reaching out to check on his wellbeing.
