Hollywood luminaries Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley have joined forces for a captivating new series titled “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” which is set to launch on Apple TV on 15 April 2023. The series, inspired by Rufi Thorpe’s novel of the same name, features a compelling narrative that follows the life of a single mother as she navigates financial woes through unexpected means.

At the premiere of the show during the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, Pfeiffer, who stars as Shayanne, the mother of the lead character Margo played by Elle Fanning, opened up about her experience working alongside her husband Kelley, a highly regarded screenwriter and producer. Their marriage, which has spanned three decades, continues to thrive amid professional collaboration.

At the panel discussion held at the Paramount Theatre, Pfeiffer shared her insights on the working dynamic with Kelley. “I learned that he prefers you to bring all your questions to the director, and I’m perfectly okay with that,” she remarked, expressing her satisfaction with the production. She termed it one of the most fulfilling experiences she has ever had in her career, praising the artistry and collaborative spirit of the cast and crew.
Pfeiffer, 67, expressed her admiration for the depth of the characters, highlighting how they were deftly crafted in the scripts. “The characters are so beautifully drawn. The talent on set is immense, and they are genuinely wonderful people. We had a fantastic time,” she said, underscoring the camaraderie that developed during filming. “I really had nothing to complain about,” she added, emphasising the positive atmosphere on set.
In an endearing anecdote, Pfeiffer recalled how she became attached to her character, a Hooters waitress from Orange County, even before she had read the book. “David told me about this role and I immediately knew I was going to enjoy playing Shayanne. It was just perfect,” she said, reflecting on the joy of embodying her character alongside talented co-stars.
Kelley, 69, had previously discussed casting Pfeiffer at the Apple TV Press Day held in February, humourously stating that he had “vowed never to work with her” due to the challenges that can arise in professional partnerships. He praised her suitability for the role of Shayanne, exclaiming that when he read the book, “I could only see one person playing it,” referring to Pfeiffer’s captivating persona.
The show is produced by A24 and Nicole Kidman’s production company, Blossom Films, with Kidman also making a guest appearance in the series. This collaboration promises to blend artistic integrity with star power, further heightening expectations ahead of its release.
Thaddea Graham, who plays Margo’s friend and roommate Susie, also shared her excitement during the SXSW premiere, illustrating how she fell in love with the source material before joining the cast. She called Thorpe “incredible,” noting the rich tapestry that the author has created, allowing actors to delve into a unique and vibrant world. Graham recalled having numerous questions for Thorpe, cheekily asking, “Are you crazy for letting me do this?”
As anticipation builds for “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” its premise appears to resonate with contemporary audiences, tackling themes of financial instability through the lens of humour and creativity. The uniqueness of the series, coupled with the talents of its cast, indicates a potentially impactful addition to the realm of streaming television.
Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to the series premiering on Apple TV, where they can witness the striking narratives brought to life by Pfeiffer, Fanning, and the rest of the ensemble. With its combination of a strong script, a skilled production team, and the charm of its leading actors, “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” is poised to attract considerable attention when it debuts.
