In a heartfelt recounting of her family’s adoption journey, Hannah Whitson shares the profound impact welcoming her younger sister Laken has had on her life. Speaking with PEOPLE, the 28-year-old reflected on her initial feelings of shock and unease that accompanied her parents’ decision to adopt a newborn. At the time, Whitson was 24, and she had assumed her family’s dynamics were stabilising as her parents transitioned into empty nesters.

“My emotions were intense,” Whitson admitted. “I felt a deep sense of loss for what I thought my life would look like now that my parents were finally free to reconnect with me.” The adoption came shortly after her parents dropped off their youngest son at university, making the sudden news that they were becoming parents again feel like an upheaval in her already established family order.

The circumstances surrounding Laken’s birth were heartbreaking. The infant girl was born to a relative battling addiction and was exposed to seven different drugs in utero, which meant she spent her first month in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her biological parents faced severe personal challenges, complicating an already tragic situation. After leaving a note asking for Whitson’s mother to be contacted, the birth mother vanished from the hospital.
In a courageous expression of their values, Whitson’s parents embraced the challenge of adoption, stating, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” This outlook prompted them to say yes to Laken’s adoption, albeit with an understanding that the commitment was irrevocable. While they approached the situation with an open heart, Hannah’s response was more intricate, filled with mixed emotions of grief and guilt.
“I realised I was mourning a future that had not even started,” she reflected, grappling with a sense of loss for her anticipated adult life. She felt guilty for her initial selfish reactions and worried she might not be able to love her sister as she deserved. The fear of altering their close-knit family dynamic only added to her emotional turmoil.
As the oldest sibling in a blended family of five children, Hannah had always assumed a supportive role, one that involved attending every family event and keeping everyone connected. The prospect of Laken’s arrival added layers of complexity to her responsibilities. It shifted her perception from being just a sister to potentially taking on a parental role.
In retrospect, Whitson acknowledges that she needed a safe space to process her feelings—without judgment. “I wished someone had affirmed that it was okay to feel so deeply,” she noted, reflecting on the struggles of navigating her emotions while grappling with her family’s needs. Yet, she chose to confront her feelings by openly discussing them with her family, rather than suppressing them.
A significant breakthrough occurred during one quiet night when her mother, fatigued from caring for Laken, asked her to watch the newborn. Holding Laken for hours, Whitson spoke her thoughts aloud, forming a connection that reverberated deeply within her. It was in this moment that she realised that Laken, void of external support, deserved every ounce of love and opportunity she could offer.
By the end of the evening, Hannah’s perspective had transformed. “I understood that she was my sister and that I would do all I could to offer her a loving life,” she asserted with newfound resolve. This epiphany did not erase her previous emotions but reframed them positively.
Today, her bond with Laken, who is now four, has blossomed into a profound relationship rooted in unconditional love. Whitson describes this connection as transcending familial trauma. Ordinary moments spent together—like sharing bedtime stories or picking Laken up from daycare—have cemented their sisterly bond. “The best part is getting to sleep beside her,” she shared, reflecting on the joy Laken brings to her life.
In looking back at their journey, Hannah understands that unfettered love leads to an unencumbered life. “True love creates a sense of freedom and growth,” she commented, highlighting that embracing love, especially in unexpected situations, is a courageous choice.
She emphasises that adapting to life’s unpredictability reveals character and cultivates joy. “Opening your heart to others requires bravery,” she concluded, demonstrating that through the challenges of embracing change, love can flourish, creating a life rich in connection and purpose.
