On 28 December 1981, Elizabeth Carr made history as the first baby conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in the United States. Now 44 years old, Carr reflects on her remarkable journey and the significance of her birth, which marked a turning point in reproductive technology. In a recent interview, she delved into her early life, the misconceptions surrounding IVF, and the broader implications of reproductive technology for families today.


Carr was born at a time when the concept of IVF was virtually unknown in America. Her parents, Judith and Roger Carr, faced significant challenges in their quest to conceive. Judith endured multiple ectopic pregnancies that complicated her aspirations for motherhood. In a critical moment, her obstetrician suggested exploring IVF after attending a pioneering conference. Carr recalls the initial disbelief but highlights her parents’ willingness to embrace the unknown, understanding they had little to lose.
“We figured out pretty quickly that my mother could get pregnant but not stay pregnant,” Carr explained. “Her tubes ruptured to the point that she had severe internal bleeding.” This tumultuous experience led her parents to venture into an untested IVF process, facilitated by doctors Howard and Georgeanna Jones in Norfolk, Virginia, as IVF was illegal in their home state of Massachusetts.

Many people mistakenly believe that IVF involves growing babies in test tubes. In reality, Carr emphasised, a petri dish is used for conception, which is later followed by implantation into the mother’s womb.
As IVF becomes more widespread, Carr underlined the evolving demographics of those seeking assisted reproductive technologies. “It’s not just for the infertility community,” Carr pointed out. She highlighted various groups that benefit from IVF, including military personnel needing to time family planning, individuals undergoing cancer treatment wanting to preserve their fertility, and LGBTQ couples requiring assistance in building their families.
