A young boy was safely returned to his parents following a remarkable rescue by a rideshare driver in San Antonio, Texas. On 10 March, Michelle Gallegos, who works for zTrip through VIA Link, was on an ordinary shift when she spotted the toddler wandering alone along a busy road near Interstate 35.

According to reports from local station KENS 5, Gallegos was driving just south of the interstate when she noticed the child playing near oncoming traffic. The boy’s identity has not been disclosed to the public. An alarming dash cam video captured Gallegos’ immediate reaction as she realised the perilous situation unfolding before her. “Oh my God, there’s this little boy in the middle of the street,” she exclaimed, despite having a passenger in the backseat.

Describing the urgency of the moment, Gallegos recalled, “This truck next to me was speeding through… If I didn’t stop, he would have gotten him.” She observed that the young boy appeared unfazed by the imminent danger he faced, skipping and playing in the street without awareness of the risks.

In the footage, Gallegos quickly pulled over as the child hopped into the road. She exited her vehicle and rushed to secure him from the oncoming traffic. “Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” she repeated in a panicked tone, before successfully ushering the boy into her car. Calmly, she initiated a conversation with him, asking for his name and where he lived. The methodical approach emphasised her priority to ensure the child’s safety amidst a frantic situation.
Once Gallegos reached a nearby area, specifically the Seven Pines Apartment Homes, she noted that the boy was in a poor condition. “He was dirty,” she remarked, adding that the child’s diaper was “soaked.” After bringing the boy to safety, she contacted the San Antonio Police for assistance.
Meanwhile, employees of the apartment complex acknowledged that the boy’s family had been searching for him with considerable urgency. The police confirmed that the child resided at the complex, and they quickly ensured a reunion with the family. Gallegos recalled a calm scene as the parents approached her vehicle, expressing relief at seeing their son again.
“I’m thankful that I was able to see him from afar and was able to stop and slow down in enough time,” Gallegos said, reflecting on the experience. She expressed a desire for others to act similarly in such situations, highlighting the instinct for compassion and responsibility that guides individuals in emergencies.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards children can face and the importance of vigilance in communities. Children often lack the awareness to understand danger, making the roles of observant adults and quick responders critical in ensuring their safety.
As a result of this dramatic encounter, Gallegos has garnered praise for her quick thinking and decisive action, with many voicing their gratitude for her role in safeguarding the young boy. As the community reflects on this episode, both Gallegos and the family are left with renewed gratitude and recognition of the importance of looking out for one another.
With the assistance of the San Antonio Police Department, the well-being of the child was ensured, allowing the family to be relieved of their distress. This heartwarming tale is a testament to the impact individuals can have when they act promptly in times of unexpected crisis.
