A young girl from California is currently in a medically induced coma following the ingestion of a button battery, a small but hazardous component commonly found in various household items. Four-year-old Camila Romero’s parents, Cassandra Tafolla and Hugo Romero, have expressed their heartbreak and concern after their daughter suffered serious injuries from the incident.

In a poignant interview with KTLA, Tafolla reflected on the ordeal, stating, “Something so small caused something so big.” The family’s nightmare began when Camila, who had been exhibiting symptoms resembling a virus alongside a persistent fever, was taken to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Initially, doctors suspected pneumonia. However, upon her mother’s insistence for further examination, a chest X-ray revealed the shocking truth: a button battery was lodged in her throat.
The damage inflicted by the battery was severe. Tafolla disclosed that it had burned a hole in Camila’s esophagus, just inches away from her lungs. “It burned a hole in her esophagus. Where it burned a hole is really close to where our lungs part. From the hole to her lungs, it’s only about an eighth of an inch from each other,” Tafolla explained, highlighting the critical nature of her daughter’s condition.
Although medical professionals successfully removed the battery, the damage had already been done. According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, when button batteries are swallowed, they can cause significant injuries due to electrical currents activated by saliva. This chemical reaction can lead to severe burns in the oesophagus within a short period, sometimes as quickly as two hours.
The family had previously been unaware of the dangers posed by button batteries. Tafolla and Romero lamented that they had never heard of such batteries, and the incident serves as a grim reminder of the hazards lurking in everyday household items, including remote controls, toys, and other electronics. In light of their experience, Romero urged other parents to be vigilant. “I just hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” he said, revealing his determination to raise awareness about these risks.
Camila’s recovery journey is far from over as she will need further surgical intervention to repair the damage caused by the battery. The emotional toll on her family has been significant, and her parents are striving to remain strong during this challenging time.
In response to the overwhelming medical costs and uncertainty surrounding Camila’s long-term recovery, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The fundraiser aims to provide financial support for the girl’s ongoing care. Andre Delgado, who organised the campaign, described Camila as a “bright” and “loving” child who is “fighting for her life.” He emphasised the necessity of community support during such a crisis, stating, “No parent should have to choose between being present for their child and worrying about financial stress during a crisis like this.”
Camila’s parents have been inundated with support from the local community, demonstrating the power of collective empathy during times of hardship. Delgado noted the importance of solidarity, saying, “Camila is strong… but she needs us.”
As the family navigates this challenging chapter, they remain hopeful for their daughter’s recovery. They wish to raise awareness about the potential dangers presented by button batteries, hoping no other child will have to endure a similar experience. The incident serves as a rallying cry for heightened vigilance among parents regarding household safety.
