U.K. Fitness Instructor in Need of Lung Transplant Is Stranded in Saudi Arabia: ‘She’s Getting Worse Every Day’

A British fitness instructor, Laura Storr, currently facing a life-threatening health crisis, is in urgent need of funds to facilitate a medical evacuation from Saudi Arabia, where she has been stationed for work since 2020. At 35 years old, Storr has been diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension, a severe condition affecting the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart.

Laura relocated to Saudi Arabia in October 2020 to manage an exercise studio. Initially, her work provided her with the necessary medical coverage, but her health has dramatically declined over the last three months. Currently hospitalised, she is unable to fly commercially due to her precarious condition. Emily Storr, Laura’s sister, shared the distressing news, explaining that Laura had been hoping to return home but was waiting for a stable moment that never came.

The situation has become increasingly dire, with Laura’s health deteriorating each day. Emily has reported that Laura developed a chest infection that has caused significant respiratory distress. “Her lungs feel bruised, and she’s struggling to get enough oxygen,” Emily remarked. This added complication has intensified the urgency for a lung transplant, which is now the only viable treatment option.

In light of her urgent medical needs, Laura’s parents, Freda, 62, and John, 73, flew to Saudi Arabia in February to support her during this challenging time. However, their situation has grown more perilous due to alarming reports of explosions in the vicinity of the hospital and nearby airport, adding to the family’s distress as they seek to secure a path for Laura’s timely medical evacuation.

With commercial insurance failing to cover the exorbitant costs associated with medical transport, her family has initiated a fundraising campaign through GoFundMe. Their goal is to raise approximately £108,600 (around $144,000) to enable a medivac. Emily expressed the overwhelming uncertainty the family is experiencing, stating, “It’s been an absolute nightmare. We need to gather this amount to get them out of here.”

While they are exploring every available avenue to ensure Laura receives the necessary treatment, her condition continues to worsen. Emily disclosed that Laura is now “coughing up quite a lot of blood,” a shocking symptom that has doctors urging the family to expedite her transfer back home before it becomes too late.

Despite the challenges, Emily remains resolute. “You’ve just got to be positive and know they’ll come home,” she stated, asserting their determination to navigate through the ordeal with hope.
