A surfer is currently recuperating from significant injuries following a shark attack at Big River Beach, located within Mendocino Headlands State Park, on Wednesday, March 18. The incident unfolded around 5.18 p.m. when the 39-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was enjoying the surf when he was bitten on both legs.

Fortunately, the surfer received prompt assistance from three off-duty lifeguards who were present at the beach. These lifeguards not only helped him out of the water but also administered vital first aid before he was transported to a hospital in Fort Bragg for further medical attention. An official statement from the California State Lifeguards, shared on Instagram, highlighted the swift and heroic response of the lifeguards involved.
In accordance with safety protocols following such attacks, Big River Beach was closed for a period of 48 hours. This measure is part of the department’s standard operating procedure to ensure public safety after an incident involving a shark. Signs informing beachgoers of the closure have been posted in the area.
The California State Lifeguards emphasised the critical role of lifeguard programmes in ensuring safety along the state’s coastline. They remarked, “This incident highlights the importance of having ocean lifeguard programmes, and we thank our lifeguards for their quick, heroic actions.” The statement further noted that while shark bites are infrequent, lifeguards are trained to respond to a multitude of emergencies, including such rare encounters with sharks.
Local authorities, including the Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), were involved in the response to the incident.
