In a recent interview, country singer Kane Brown reflected on a challenging chapter of his career, revealing that he believes he lost approximately £8 million due to an unfavourable business arrangement he entered into at the outset of his journey in the music industry. Speaking on “Bobby Bones Presents: The BobbyCast,” Brown recounted how the deal, which he describes as “awful,” impacted his early career trajectory.

At 32 years old, Brown recalled the struggles he faced as he sought to establish himself in the music world during the early days of social media. He was “just a normal kid” trying to promote his work on Facebook when an opportunity arose. Eager for success, he signed a 50/50 deal without fully understanding the implications, and at the time, he was living out of his car to attend important business meetings. “I didn’t have anybody on my side. I didn’t have my mum. I didn’t have my dad. So I just signed a 50/50 deal,” he shared.
As his music gained traction and his first songs went viral, Brown began attracting attention from various record labels. However, due to the binding nature of the early agreement, he found himself compelled to sign with Sony. While he expressed appreciation for the label—acknowledging that they have treated him well—he lamented the constraints imposed by the initial deal. Brown stated, “I love Sony. This is not against Sony. They’ve been good to me. But I was forced to sign there, and it’s just been so long.”
While reflecting on his financial losses due to the contract, Brown stated unequivocally that he believes he has been deprived of around £8 million. “I asked my business manager. I got screwed out of that,” he commented, indicating the significant impact this deal had on his earnings and peace of mind.
Despite the challenges, Brown has managed to find a silver lining within the cloud of his initial misfortune. He credited the person involved in the contract for leading him to his wife Katelyn, whom he married in 2018. The couple share three children: daughters Kingsley, six, and Kodi, four, alongside their two-year-old son, Krewe. Brown shared, “If I wouldn’t have signed with [the person], I wouldn’t have my family. I wouldn’t know my wife. I wouldn’t have my kids.”
The couple’s introduction came about because Katelyn had previously worked with the individual who signed Brown, and the singer revealed that he was initially slated to appear in her music video before their actual meeting. Reflecting on this twist of fate, he remarked, “That’s why I always look at it like — if I wouldn’t have done this, I wouldn’t have my family.”
Currently, Brown feels fortunate despite the repercussions of his earlier decisions. He expressed gratitude for his ability to support his family, mentioning that without his music career, he could still be working at FedEx. “We would be living a little bit different life [had the bad deal not happened],” he noted. “God’s got a plan for me,” he added, emphasising his belief in a greater purpose.
The singer, who made his debut with a self-titled album in 2016, released his most recent record, “The High Road,” last year. Looking forward, he is gearing up to open his Nashville bar, Kane Brown’s on Broadway, over Memorial Day weekend.
As Brown continues to grow both personally and professionally, he has expressed excitement for his upcoming album, citing personal development and maturity gained through therapy as key factors influencing his work. “I’m really excited for the record I’m working on now,” he concluded, looking forward to the next chapter of his musical journey.
