Born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Oklahoma, in 1940, Norris experienced a challenging upbringing marked by his father’s struggles with alcoholism. He candidly discussed his childhood in his 1988 memoir, “The Secret of Inner Strength: My Story,” revealing how his father’s absence and volatile behaviour affected his self-image and social interactions as a child. “The biggest problem I had was poor self-image, which was probably the main cause of my shyness,” he recalled.

Initially struggling with the martial art, he dedicated himself to rigorous training, seeking to improve his life and self-esteem. Upon returning to the United States, he began teaching karate to fellow servicemen, which ultimately helped him overcome his insecurities and blossomed into a successful career.
His rise in the martial arts community led him to cross paths with notable figures, including Bruce Lee. The two formed a friendship after Norris was cast in Lee’s 1972 film, “Way of the Dragon,” which became a commercial success and helped propel Norris into the limelight. This opportunity marked the beginning of a prolific film career that produced titles such as “Good Guys Wear Black,” “Missing in Action,” and “Code of Silence.”
In addition to his action films, Norris aimed to evolve his image beyond that of a mere martial arts star, often choosing scripts that avoided gratuitous violence and substance abuse theme. He expressed his hope to be seen as a serious actor and a positive role model for young audiences.
“Walker, Texas Ranger” was instrumental in solidifying Norris’s legacy, showcasing his range as an actor and storyteller. The show, which delved into various topics, including family values and societal issues, featured Norris as a ranger who fought crime while also addressing real-life challenges faced by the community. In addition to his work in entertainment, Norris was passionate about philanthropy. He founded the United Fighting Arts Federation and the Kickstart Kids programme, both designed to promote martial arts among children and deter them from negative influences. He also served as a spokesperson for the U.S. Veterans Administration, demonstrating his commitment to supporting those who served.
