In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the duo discussed the launch of Casamigos’ new pre-mixed margaritas—one that’s spicy and another that’s classic—representing their respective preferences in this friendly contest. The FIFA World Cup is set to return to North America in 2026, featuring 48 teams competing across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, marking a significant event that promises to capture the attention of millions worldwide.

Key, aged 54, expressed that their competition will revolve around each celebrity’s preferred flavour. However, as he pointed out, their shared allegiance to team Casamigos complicates matters. “In this kind of circumstance, a rivalry typically means that one has to don the opposing team’s jersey,” Key joked. “But here, we’re both on the same side,” he added, highlighting the light-hearted nature of their competition.
Union, 53, who has a background in athletics as a former soccer player for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, noted the difficulty in placing friendly stakes on teams since they support many of the same squads. However, they are determined to find ways to challenge each other, with Key suggesting they should focus on aspects that could lead to embarrassment for the other if their team selection falls short.
The conversation pivoted to the kits of participating teams, particularly those from Africa. Union shared her admiration for Nigeria’s uniforms, revealing her excitement about the aesthetic appeal of international football jerseys. “We are both considering African teams,” she said, indicating that if Union backs Nigeria, while Key chooses Morocco, they would indeed have to wear each other’s team kits.
Expanding on their competitive spirit, Union proposed a wager involving hosting duties. “If my team emerges victorious, you and your wife will need to host a dinner, and vice versa,” she stated, putting an entertaining spin on their arrangement. Key’s spouse, Elle Key, whom he married in 2018, would also participate in the hosting challenge, making for a potentially lively gathering.
Father and former NBA player Dwyane Wade’s wife, Union also brings her own hosting experience to the table. The couple, who have been married since 2014, regularly entertain guests and share a daughter, Kaavia, while also caring for Wade’s three children from previous relationships and his nephew, who is legally in their custody. Union highlighted the importance of their hosting roles, particularly the bartender task, which can be time-consuming during gatherings. “Hosting can be demanding, especially when you’re the designated bartender,” she remarked.
Starting in March 2026, the Casamigos Classic Lime and Spicy Flavours will be available with special FIFA World Cup branding, transitioning into a permanent fixture from August 1, 2026. Their playful rivalry extends into a taste test between the two flavours, with Union asserting her preference for the spicy margarita to match her vibrant personality. “I want a cocktail that embodies my passion,” she expressed, contrasting her choice with Key’s inclination towards the classic margarita. “I’m a traditionalist. I prefer to keep things straightforward,” he said, emphasising his focus on the essence of the game and possibly the spirit of camaraderie during matches.
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, with games starting on June 11 and continuing until July 19, both Union and Key are eager to attend at least one match in person. Keen to share the exhilarating experience with each other and their fans, Key described the anticipated atmosphere as akin to a carnival, promising an unforgettable occasion.
Casamigos is currently hosting a sweepstake on its website, giving fans a chance to delve into the lively spirit of the World Cup alongside these two prominent figures. With the tournament expected to draw immense crowds and billions of viewers, Union and Key’s quirky rivalry is sure to add an engaging layer to the event. As the world turns its gaze towards the pitches, the excitement continues to build around the upcoming festivities and the friendly competition between these two stars.
