An unsettling encounter involving a humanoid robot has recently made headlines in China after an elderly woman was taken to hospital following a surprise encounter. The incident occurred on March 5 in the Patane district of Macau, where a 70-year-old woman unexpectedly came across a Unitree G1 robot while occupied with her mobile phone.

Local authorities reported that the woman, taken aback by the robot’s presence behind her, expressed her shock loudly in Cantonese, stating, “You’re making my heart race! You’ve got plenty to do, so what’s the point of messing around with this? Are you freaking crazy?” The sudden appearance of the robot, part of a promotional event organised by a local education centre, caused her noticeable distress.
Despite the commotion, officials confirmed that there was no physical interaction between the woman and the robot. However, she experienced discomfort and was subsequently taken to hospital for a check-up. After being examined, she was discharged and chose not to pursue any legal action against the robot’s operators.
Public broadcaster TDM reported that viral video footage captured the woman’s reaction and the police response to the incident. Although officers were seen accompanying the robot following the event, they clarified that they did not confiscate the machine. Instead, police advised the operators to refrain from causing alarm or danger to the public in future demonstrations.
The Unitree G1 robot involved in the incident had previously been utilised for various promotional activities at notable locations, including the historic Ruins of St Paul’s and the bustling Cotai Strip, as reported by the South China Morning Post. It appears to have been well-received in these contexts until this recent event.
Towin Mak, a representative from the education centre overseeing the robot, explained that while the robot is equipped with advanced obstacle avoidance features, it was unable to divert in this instance. The narrow walkway permitted no space for the robot to manoeuvre when the woman unexpectedly paused to check her phone. As a result, the G1 simply stood still behind her.
Mak Kin Choi, the head of the education centre, acknowledged that the humanoid robot had participated in three previous promotional events, all of which were met with generally positive feedback. He noted the unfortunate outcome of this encounter but expressed hope for future interactions that could help enhance public understanding of robotic technology.
