This award, established in late 2025, is a joint initiative between acclaimed author James Patterson and the online bookstore Bookshop.org, with the aim of bringing attention to debut authors while also highlighting the crucial role of independent bookstores across the United States.

Among the authors nominated for this prestigious accolade are Virginia Evans with her work, *The Correspondent*, and Sarah Aziza, whose novel *The Hollow Half* has also made the list. Other contenders include Venessa Vida Kelley’s *When the Tides Held the Moon*, Joss Richard’s *It’s Different This Time*, and Milo Todd’s *The Lilac People*. All selected works encompass English-language debut novels published in the U.S. during the past year, specifically from 1 January to 31 December 2025.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of independent booksellers from qualifying bookstores nationwide, following the announcement of the longlist in February. Since its launch in 2020, Bookshop.org has significantly contributed to the indie bookstore scene, raising over $40 million to support their operations across the United States. The organisation is determined to foster a future where local bookstores thrive alongside a diverse array of authors.
