A former teacher and soccer coach from Downers Grove, Illinois, is facing serious allegations of sexual abuse involving a minor. Christina Formella, who held various roles in the local school system, was arrested on March 16, 2025, after explicit communications were discovered between her and a 15-year-old student.

The investigation commenced when the student’s mother found concerning text messages on her son’s phone. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the alleged abuse spanned over several months, reportedly starting in January 2023 and continuing until August 2024. At the time of these alleged incidents, Formella was 28 years old, while the student was 15.
Robert Berlin, the DuPage County State’s Attorney, remarked on the gravity of the accusations, stating, “The allegations against Ms. Formella are extremely disturbing. It is alleged that she used her position of trust and authority as a tutor and a coach to sexually assault a minor student.” Initially charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault, Formella saw her charge count rise significantly after an indictment in June 2025 revealed an additional 52 counts related to previously unreported incidents.
Formella, who began her teaching career during the 2020-21 academic year, had major responsibilities, including working as a special education teacher and coaching both boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at the local high school. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was arrested, just a day after the victim reported the incidents to the police, accompanied by his mother.
Footage from the traffic stop that led to Formella’s arrest showed her visibly distressed as she was placed into custody. During the encounter, she expressed confusion about her situation and broke down in tears in the back of the police vehicle. While she initially acknowledged that the abuse had begun “a year and a half ago,” she later denied any sexual involvement with the student, insisting that he was a “stalker” who was out to tarnish her reputation.
The police investigation revealed further evidence, including explicit text messages retrieved from her phone. In one such message, Formella allegedly expressed affection towards the student, indicating the nature of their relationship. She claimed, however, that these texts were fabricated by the victim, who she alleged had taken her phone during class.
Additionally, authorities found written notes on her phone that detailed what she referred to as a “memoir.” This document contained reflections on her relationship with the student, including feelings of betrayal and anger over perceived infidelities. Formella reportedly claimed that these writings were selected expressions of her anxiety, dismissing any implications of physical misconduct.
Following the initial charges, the court has since denied a motion to detain Formella prior to trial. She has been released on the condition that she refrains from entering Downers Grove South High School and does not engage with minors, including students. Furthermore, she has been placed on administrative leave and has voluntarily resigned from her teaching position, relinquishing her teaching licence in the process.
As the case progresses, Formella now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 60 years if convicted on all counts. The community, still reeling from the shock of these revelations, has grappled with the implications of such misconduct occurring within its educational institutions.
