Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the disappearance of Jill Kloppenburg, believed to have been missing for over a year, following the recent discovery of human remains in the home of a man charged with her murder. The suspect, Shawn Sullivan, 40, from Tyngsborough, was taken into custody after a friend allegedly informed police of Sullivan’s confession to the crime.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Tyngsborough Chief of Police Shaun Woods addressed the public on March 16, during which they detailed the circumstances surrounding Kloppenburg’s disappearance. The 47-year-old was reported missing on February 2025, after friends noted they had not physically seen her since August 2024. They last had contact with her via text message on November 20, 2024, with her final recorded phone activity occurring on January 14, 2025.
Sullivan’s arrest and subsequent charges include murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and improper disposal of human remains. According to police reports, he allegedly confessed to killing Kloppenburg to a friend, stating that the act took place around January 2025. Authorities allege Sullivan told the friend that he shot Kloppenburg and concealed her body under the garage floor in his home.
The investigation was initiated when Nashua police received information from a man who identified himself as Sullivan’s acquaintance. Upon cross-referencing national databases, officers discovered that Kloppenburg had been reported missing. Following this lead, a search warrant was executed at Sullivan’s residence on March 15, where investigators uncovered what appeared to be an area of freshly patched flooring in the garage.
Authorities confirmed through ground-penetrating radar that something was buried beneath the garage floor. After further examination, investigators discovered a plastic bag containing what has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as human remains. While the remains have not yet been officially confirmed to belong to Kloppenburg, the medical team is currently conducting DNA analysis and an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Steven Kloppenburg, Jill’s uncle, shared his anguish on social media, expressing hope for clarity regarding the remains. “They could tell me they were 100% positive the remains were hers, though they still have to confirm it with DNA,” he stated. “She’s been missing for 14 months and has probably been out there the whole time.”
As investigators work diligently to gather more evidence, Sullivan is expected to be arraigned in Lowell District Court on March 17. The authorities have labelled the found remains as Jane Doe until formal identification can be made by the medical examiner.
