The Prince of Wales recently took part in a charity bike ride alongside British comedian Greg James as part of a week-long initiative aimed at raising funds for Comic Relief. The ambitious journey, which spans approximately 1,000 kilometres, commenced in Weymouth and will conclude in Edinburgh, with a significant leg of the ride taking them through South Yorkshire on 17th March.

In a light-hearted video shared on social media, the 43-year-old royal appeared on a tandem bicycle, positioned behind James. Dressed in a sleek, all-black cycling outfit and sporting a vibrant red helmet, Prince William was seen enjoying the picturesque views of the Yorkshire landscape. The excursion marked the halfway point of James’ journey, which is being streamed live on Radio 1’s YouTube channel.

During their ride, the pair encountered a group of children, whom James enthusiastically greeted. He then pointed out Prince William, exclaiming, “It’s Prince William!” However, the royal quickly quipped back, claiming, “It’s a lookalike!” The playful banter continued as William added, “He’s hallucinating,” eliciting laughter from both men, highlighting the jovial atmosphere of the outing.

Greg James has embarked on this epic ride to support Comic Relief, a UK charity recognised for its efforts through initiatives like Red Nose Day. With over £1 million raised thus far, James’s determination and commitment to the cause have been commendable. As William praised James, he remarked on how such actions exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in the UK, “What you’ve done is set an example about helping out,” he said. “It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others.”

Reflecting on the unexpected participation of the Prince, James acknowledged the significance of the occasion. “I’d joked when I recorded a recent radio show with him that he was very welcome to turn up and do a stint on the tandem, but I didn’t think he’d actually call my bluff,” he shared. “I can’t believe the impact of this daft challenge so far, and it’s just beyond my wildest dreams that I’d get trusted to carry the future king around on a big long tandem.”

This latest venture isn’t William’s first foray into cycling; he and the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, have been spotted riding mountain bikes together during previous public engagements. Additionally, he has previously shared fond memories of motorcycling from his youth, a hobby he eventually gave up due to concerns over Kate’s safety.

The timing of the bike ride coincided with an emotional tribute William paid to his late mother, Princess Diana, on Mothering Sunday, which occurred just two days prior. He shared a nostalgic photograph from 1984 on Instagram, featuring a young William holding hands with Diana. As he reflected, “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today,” underscoring the importance of familial bonds and lasting memories.

Further emphasising his busy schedule, the Prince also attended a Six Nations rugby match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on 16th March. In his capacity as patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, he was seen passionately singing along to the Welsh national anthem, displaying his enthusiasm for the sport.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to return to official duties shortly, with their next engagement involving hosting the President of Nigeria for a state visit.
