Legendary broadcaster Dick Vitale is set to make his NCAA tournament debut as he takes to the microphone on March 17. The 86-year-old sports commentator will call the First Four play-in game between Texas and North Carolina State, a significant milestone in his remarkable broadcasting career that has spanned nearly five decades.

Reflecting on this upcoming event, Vitale expressed his excitement in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. He noted that although he has had numerous opportunities to call NCAA tournament games in the past, his loyalty to ESPN had prevented him from taking the plunge until now. This year, he is particularly looking forward to reuniting with fellow commentator Charles Barkley, with whom he had previously enjoyed a successful collaboration during a December game between Kentucky and Indiana. “I had a lot of fun with Charles,” Vitale commented, highlighting that it was among his favourite experiences throughout his extensive tenure at ESPN.

In recent years, Vitale has faced significant health challenges that have tested his resilience. His journey began in August 2021 when he received a diagnosis of melanoma. This was soon followed by a lymphoma diagnosis. The broadcaster endured six months of chemotherapy and subsequently underwent 65 sessions of radiation treatment, which ultimately led him into remission. However, his health challenges continued as he was later diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in 2023. “My whole life revolves around my voice,” Vitale recounted, revealing the difficulties he faced during treatment when he was unable to speak and had to communicate by writing.
Despite these hardships, Vitale remains optimistic and passionate about his health and well-being. He shared insights about the journey of cancer patients, emphasising the importance of choice in overcoming such daunting obstacles. “You can roll over from it or you can just battle and battle,” he advised. This message of hope and positivity has resonated with his fans, many of whom have offered their support through prayers and well-wishes that he believes contributed to his current status of being cancer-free.
As he prepares for his return to the broadcasting booth, Vitale also finds himself in a time of waiting and anticipation, as he awaits the results of new scans. He described this period as “nerve-wracking” while drawing a parallel to the pressure faced by college basketball players competing in the tournament. For these young athletes, their performance can mean everything. He noted the immense stress and emotion surrounding the event, as a single bad game can determine their fate.
“The stress is unreal,” Vitale remarked, acknowledging the high stakes involved in the tournament. He also highlighted the role of fitness and mental well-being during such trying times, praising Planet Fitness for providing a wellness environment through resources such as HydroMassage beds and massage chairs. Vitale’s partnership with the fitness centre underscores the importance he places on health and recovery.
While Vitale is focused on the upcoming tournament and the narratives that will unfold, he has not lost sight of his personal health journey. “When that phone rings and you get those results, it’s life-changing,” he shared candidly. The emotional weight of such moments is heavy, and he articulated the multifaceted feelings that accompany both good and bad news from a doctor.
Overall, Dick Vitale’s entry into the NCAA tournament this March represents not just a career milestone but a testament to his resilience and determination. As he prepares to immerse himself in the excitement of March Madness, he does so with a profound appreciation for life and the support he has received along the way. This year’s tournament promises to be an emotional celebration of not just basketball, but also of the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
