Now, more than two decades later, Luna’s childhood memory resurfaced when she received a conditional job offer from American Airlines in 2024. Motivated by this opportunity, she began to reflect on Hughes and the significant impact she had on her life. “I found the old photos my grandpa took and wondered if she was still flying,” Luna explained. “I thought it would be wonderful if she could pin my wings when I became a flight attendant.”

Determined to reconnect with Hughes, Luna posted in a flight attendant Facebook group, seeking any leads on the person who had inspired her at such a young age. To her surprise, she received a response shortly after. Hughes, now a Chicago-based flight attendant with Southwest Airlines, was still in the industry after almost three decades. It turned out that she was also friends with one of Luna’s own acquaintances, making their connection feel even more serendipitous.

The culmination of Luna’s dream came during her flight attendant training when Hughes was there to pin her wings, signifying the start of Luna’s career. This moment was particularly poignant for her. “She gave me my first set when I was six, so having her pin my wings now was surreal,” Luna reflected. “It really felt like everything came full circle.”

However, Luna’s journey to this moment was not without challenges. Prior to applying for the flight attendant position, she was deeply immersed in a career in journalism and was uncertain about leaving her dream job behind. Out of an astonishing 100,000 applicants, she advanced to the final interview stage in Texas. “They told us that only about 2,000 people made it to the in-person interview,” she explained, her excitement palpable.

Tragedy struck during her training, as Luna experienced the profound loss of her mother in the second week. “It was incredibly hard, but I know she would have wanted me to finish,” Luna shared, drawing strength from her family’s resilience, notably her brother, who had completed Marine Corps boot camp after their father’s passing years before.
