Tragedy has struck on the Sunshine Coast of Australia following a climbing accident that has left one woman dead and her boyfriend in critical condition. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, 15 March, while the young couple, both aged 18, were hiking at Mount Beerwah.

Local authorities confirmed that the pair fell while navigating one of the popular trails. Reports indicate the woman fell approximately 200 feet, while her boyfriend fell around 300 feet during the incident. Both individuals hailed from Brisbane and were part of a group of young hikers who were divided into smaller teams as they traversed the mountain.
Emergency services were quickly summoned to the scene, but despite their efforts, the woman sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her boyfriend was found to have suffered critical head injuries and was airlifted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Senior Sergeant Kylie McLellan, who is investigating the incident, remarked on the tragic nature of this accident, stating, “It’s an extraordinary sad and tragic accident.” Witnesses reported that the woman’s sister was present and witnessed the fall, a factor that added to the distress of the situation.
Authorities mentioned that light rain had fallen in the area that day, contributing to slippery conditions on the mountain trails. McLellan explained that the combination of the wet terrain and the inherent risks of mountain climbing can lead to dangerous situations, and sadly, this was one of those instances.
The couple was part of a larger group of young climbers when they lost their footing. Fortunately, the two other hikers who were with them at the time of the incident were not injured and were successfully rescued from the mountain later on Sunday.
Adding to the safety concerns, the mountain had been closed to the public from Monday, 9 March, until the Sunday of the incident due to adverse weather conditions. It was initially set to reopen the following day, but officials have now extended the closure until Tuesday, 17 March, due to continuous high rainfall in the region.
The Queensland Parks and Forests agency stated that this extension is a preventative measure following recent heavy rain, which significantly increases the risk of rockfalls on the trails. They advised that the stability of the rock formations can be severely affected by the saturation of water, resulting in dangerous climbing conditions.
As investigations into the incident continue, community members are coming to terms with the loss of life and the severe injury sustained by the young man. Tributes have begun to flow from friends, family, and the local community, reflecting on the couple’s youthful aspirations and the joy they found in outdoor activities.
In a statement, police are reminding all hikers to exercise caution, particularly in conditions where weather patterns can change rapidly. They emphasised the importance of being aware of safety protocols when navigating treacherous terrain, particularly for those inexperienced with the risks associated with mountain climbing.
