**Sarah Michelle Gellar Reflects on Canceled ‘Buffy’ Reboot**

Sarah Michelle Gellar, renowned for her iconic role as Buffy Summers in the acclaimed series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has opened up about the recent cancellation of a planned reboot. In an interview with *People*, the actress expressed her disappointment regarding how the situation was handled and the timing of the decision.
Gellar was in the midst of celebrating the premiere of her new film, “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” at the SXSW Film & TV Festival when she received the unexpected news. On March 11, just before stepping on stage, she learned that Hulu had halted progress on the revival of the show that launched her career to stardom. Gellar was taken aback, stating, “Nobody saw this coming,” emphasising the shock felt not only by her but also by those involved in the project.
After the original series concluded in 2003, Gellar felt an enduring demand from fans eager to see her character return. It was a revival spearheaded by Gellar and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao that brought the prospect back to life. The duo aimed to update the narrative with a fresh slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, while still intertwining Gellar’s character within the storyline.
Reflecting on the creative process, Gellar shared her excitement about the direction the revival was taking. “Chloé and I talked a lot. The dialogue flew off the tongue,” she recounted, describing the vibrant atmosphere on set. “It was like, ‘Oh, we’re here. We’re doing this.’ I loved the duality that we had this new, younger slayer who was where Buffy was when the show started,” she added, reaffirming her enthusiasm for the project.
Disappointment loomed, however, as Gellar revealed that the trigger for the cancellation seemed to stem from one executive’s lack of connection to the original series. Despite the show’s importance to countless fans, including Gellar and Zhao, the executive reportedly expressed a sense of pride in not being acquainted with the original run. This disconnect, according to Gellar, presented a significant challenge from the outset.
Following the premiere of “Ready or Not 2,” which received positive reviews, Gellar took to social media to address the cancellation. The emotional weight of relaying the news to fans was palpable. “It was tough. But it was also a chance for me to take in the love that I was being shown,” she stated, highlighting the overwhelming response from the show’s dedicated following. The fan reactions were immediate, filled with both heartbreak and anger over the decision.
Gellar humourously noted a suggestion from one fan seeking assistance from Dolly Parton, whose production company was behind the original “Buffy” series. “I wish there was a magic wand Dolly could wave. But don’t blame Dolly for this one!” Gellar quipped, reiterating that their motivation to revive the series stemmed from the fans’ enduring affection for Buffy.
While expressing her frustrations, Gellar also recognised the accomplishments of her long-time collaborator, Zhao. The two shared similar feelings of disappointment, but Gellar encouraged Zhao to focus on her recent achievements, particularly on the red carpet at the Oscars. “We don’t want to let the fans down. That hurts,” she articulated, but added that it’s crucial to celebrate what they had accomplished together.
As for the project’s future, Gellar noted that it remained uncertain. A source familiar with the situation revealed that while Disney maintains ownership of the intellectual property, doors could remain open for the creative team should they choose to pursue other opportunities. Gellar mentioned that she has stayed in touch with her original castmates from “Buffy,” noting particularly strong support from David Boreanaz.
“The legacy is still there and this doesn’t diminish it,” Gellar declared firmly. The actress reassured fans that although the reboot did not come to fruition, the spirit of Buffy and her timeless story would endure. “That legacy is for them,” she concluded, leaving the possibility of a future iteration hanging in the balance, but reminding fans of the lasting impact of the original series.
