“They called me at first to audition for JFK Jr.,” Bergen recounted. “Most of the time when Ryan Murphy wants me to audition for something, I’m saying yes no matter what it is. But in this particular case, I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not your JFK.’ I know that.” He acknowledged the physical expectations associated with the role and felt it was unrealistic for him to meet those standards.
After passing on the opportunity, Bergen was later approached to audition for the character of Anthony Radziwill, leading him to read the scripts for the initial episodes. He described his reaction as one of immediate enthusiasm, noting his deep connection to the writing, despite his initial reservations.
Interestingly, Bergen found a personal link to Radziwill’s story as a cancer survivor himself, given that Radziwill’s own narrative includes a battle with cancer. “Especially because he initially had the same cancer I had—testicular cancer,” Bergen revealed. He expressed the importance of sharing his story to encourage men to seek medical advice, stressing that early detection can be a matter of life and death.
