A remarkable archaeological discovery, believed to date back around 2,000 years, has sadly been lost to the elements just as experts were making strides in documenting it. The footprints, which are thought to have originated in the early first century A.D., were uncovered on Lunan Bay in Angus, Scotland, after erosion caused by recent storms.

The unusual site was brought to light by a couple, Ivor Campbell and Jenny Snedden, who were out walking their dogs when they stumbled upon distinct markings in the sand. Recognising the potential significance of their find, Campbell promptly contacted Bruce Mann, an archaeologist from the local council. Mann quickly grasped the urgency of the situation and enlisted the help of specialists from the University of Aberdeen for further investigation.

Upon arrival at the site, Professor Kate Britton and her team found that the prints were not just an ordinary discovery; they were exceptionally rare artefacts from a pivotal period in history often referred to as the time of Boudicca, Jesus, and the apex of the Roman Empire. Radiocarbon dating later confirmed their astounding age, affirming the prints must have been left behind two millennia ago.
Upon observing the situation, Britton expressed her deep concern that harsh storms and abnormally high spring tides could deteriorate the footprints at any moment. “We prioritised getting to the site, equipping ourselves as best we could in a hurry,” she remarked, highlighting the urgent nature of the archaeological effort. The team faced extremely challenging weather, which Britton described as “horrendous.” She likened their working conditions to being “sand-blasted,” noting it was among the most difficult environments she had ever operated in.
For three days, the team toiled diligently at the site, with Campbell and Snedden offering invaluable assistance. They provided not only logistical support, such as parking for vehicles on their land, but also warm drinks and shelter from the unforgiving cold. Their help was commendable, and Britton has since acknowledged the couple’s contribution to the operation.
Tragically, the situation took a turn for the worse. When the archaeologists returned to the beach a week later, they discovered that the ancient footprints had been irrevocably damaged by the relentless waves. Britton expressed her disappointment, highlighting the uniqueness of such footprint sites, which are often considered a once-in-a-career opportunity for archaeologists.
While the loss of these footprints is a significant blow to the archaeological community, Britton has urged the public to remain vigilant regarding sites at risk. She emphasised the importance of reporting new findings promptly so that others do not suffer a similar fate. “The preservation of our past is critical, and it relies on the engagement of the community in safeguarding sites as they emerge,” she advised.
