In an emotional testament to the power of humour in the face of grief, 29-year-old Andy, popularly known as Big Farmer Andy on TikTok, has taken to social media to navigate his profound loss. The Queensland farmer recently experienced the death of his mother, who passed away on 12 January 2026 at the age of 64. Her passing came after years of battling the lingering effects of traumatic brain injuries, which she sustained following a tragic fall in 2017.

Reflecting on the moment that changed his life, Andy recalls the night prior to his mother’s injury, stating, “I was a 21-year-old boy the night before it occurred, the next day a man.” This experience marked a significant turning point for him and his family, as his mother endured an arduous recovery process that included intense rehabilitation after a serious brain haemorrhage and subsequent strokes.

In a heartfelt letter to his late mother, which he shared exclusively, Andy expressed his love and the indelible impact she had on his life. “My heart will be perpetually heavy,” he wrote, acknowledging her struggles while celebrating her legacy. He described her as a “generous and wise woman,” who dedicated her life to providing a nurturing environment for him and his brothers.
Following her death, Andy turned to TikTok as a means of processing his grief and paying tribute to his mother in a uniquely personal way. In a darkly humorous video that quickly resonated with social media users, he outlined all the reasons he found it “rude” for her to pass away. This tongue-in-cheek tribute gained nearly 2 million views, sparking conversations among those who shared their own experiences of loss.
Within the video, Andy highlighted emotional milestones, such as his upcoming 30th birthday and the future births of his children, emphasising the heartache of losing a mother who would never meet her grandchildren. “It’s heartbreaking and disappointing that my children will never know her in person, only through photos, videos and stories,” he shared. He also expressed a desire to honour her legacy by applying the parenting lessons she had taught him.
The video became a space for Andy to articulate his grief without losing sight of the joy his mother had brought into his life. Amidst the humour, he detailed a promise they had made to watch “The Shawshank Redemption” together, marking the pact with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia. “We never were able to watch the movie together before she passed, so I will wait until someday we can. Wherever that may be!” he said, signalling hope and connection beyond loss.
Although Andy employs humour in his reflections on grief, he is clear that his intention is not to diminish the significance of his mother’s passing. Rather, he views dark humour as a vital coping mechanism, stating, “Making light out of tragedy is therapeutic.” He advocates for the idea that allowing oneself to remain overwhelmed by sorrow may do no justice to the memories of those who have passed.
Andy’s candid approach to navigating grief resonates deeply with many, as his video serves as both a tribute to his mother and a reminder of the universal nature of loss. Through his poignant yet light-hearted reflections, he encourages others to embrace their own grief in all its complexities, acknowledging that humour can serve as a lifeline during some of life’s darkest moments.
As he continues to honour his mother’s memory, Andy’s journey exemplifies a resourceful way to cope with tragedy, demonstrating that while loss is inevitable, the ways in which we remember and celebrate our loved ones can be just as significant.
