Before becoming a household name, Pankow worked at The Cheesecake Factory located in the bustling Los Angeles shopping centre, The Grove. Reflecting on his time in the restaurant, he noted that he spent approximately two years there, primarily as a dishwasher. Surprisingly, Pankow admitted he shied away from the prospect of becoming a server due to concerns over the responsibilities the role entailed.
“My experience there was quite interesting,” Pankow said. “I signed myself up for the dish room and was back there for about six or seven months. Eventually, they promoted me to busser.” His good-humoured recollection of the promotion revealed a sense of self-awareness, as he recalled his employers asking him what position he desired, to which he responded, “Busser?”
Pankow’s ambitions at that time appeared modest, as he candidly expressed that he didn’t believe he was on the cusp of a breakthrough in acting. While he had participated in several short films and had some significant projects on his resume, he felt that the monumental opportunity he had been hoping for was still out of reach.
“I did feel like I was learning,” he explained. “I really did feel like I was a sponge, taking in things to do, things not to do.” This period of lessons and growth, albeit far from the limelight, helped shape Pankow both personally and professionally.
The actor’s time working at The Cheesecake Factory was not entirely without its share of advantages. He described how the job instilled a sense of intentionality in his daily life, providing a welcome sense of structure during a pivotal period. In addition to his restaurant job, Pankow almost landed another role in a Netflix series called “Trinkets,” where he proceeded to the second round of callbacks.
