The illicit connection was eventually uncovered when a fellow student witnessed Cummins and Elizabeth kissing in January 2017. This incident led to Cummins being suspended, but the teacher maintained contact with the teenager, convincing her that their only option was to flee together. On 13 March 2017, they vanished, igniting a frantic nationwide manhunt that lasted 38 days.
Cummins had built a seemingly respectability façade. Described as a dedicated teacher and churchgoer, he had worked at the school since 2011 after a career in the medical field. However, beneath this veneer lay deeply troubling behaviours that would ultimately lead to his downfall. During his court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to transporting a minor across state lines for criminal sexual conduct, receiving a sentence of 20 years in federal prison in January 2019.
