Tobias Dorzon, a celebrated chef with roots in Maryland, experienced a life-altering incident on November 5, 2024. The Food Network star was shot eleven times in a harrowing robbery outside his home in Hyattsville. This traumatic event not only threatened his career but also challenged his very ability to walk.

Dorzon’s ordeal began as he returned home from a date with his long-distance girlfriend, Crystal Swan. After enjoying an evening at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Washington, D.C., an Uber ride took them back to his residence. Upon arriving, he noticed a suspicious vehicle parked behind them. Unbeknownst to him, a group of five individuals emerged from the car and began shooting at him. Dorzon recalled the chaos, saying he tried to protect Swan as gunfire erupted, ultimately collapsing to the ground while attempting to escape the violence.
After the attack, the assailants made off with valuables estimated at around £80,000, which included high-end jewellery and a designer watch. In the wake of the shooting, Dorzon managed to contact his brother through FaceTime, while a vigilant neighbour dialled emergency services. He was rushed to hospital, where he spent two months enduring multiple surgeries and extensive physical rehabilitation.
Reflecting on this harrowing period, Dorzon expressed gratitude for his survival and his continued passion for cooking. “I am just super grateful to be here, to be in the moment, and to still be able to cook and give people an experience,” he shared. His love for culinary arts drives him to create memorable dining experiences, which he considers his ultimate dream.
Dorzon’s culinary journey began long before this incident. Born to Liberian immigrant parents, he admired his father, a chef who owned a successful West African restaurant. Despite initially choosing a path in professional football, where he played in the NFL for teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans, Dorzon eventually transitioned to cooking. Noticing he had a knack for it when he began preparing meals for his teammates, he realised he had a true calling in the kitchen.
After honing his skills at various culinary schools and working in the catering industry, he established his first solo restaurant, Huncho House, in 2022. Dorzon’s talent quickly earned him the title of Maryland Chef of the Year in 2024, further anchoring his reputation in the culinary world. His dishes reflect his West African heritage, blending traditional recipes with innovative techniques.
As the legal proceedings for his attackers unfold, one suspect, identified as Devin Demetrius Spivey, has been arrested. He faces several serious charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery. The investigation remains ongoing, with multiple suspects still being sought, which adds layers of complexity to an already painful situation for Dorzon.
Upon his recovery, Dorzon has returned to the culinary scene, showcasing his resilience through participation in Food Network competitions, including the Tournament of Champions VII. The return to the competition holds personal significance; he received steadfast support from Guy Fieri, a figure who became a source of encouragement throughout his recovery journey.
“I was fortunate to have Guy checking in on me, ensuring my medical needs were met. His support during this challenging time was invaluable,” Dorzon acknowledged, highlighting the bond that formed between them during his healing process.
Today, along with rebuilding his career, Dorzon navigates the emotional aftermath of the shooting. He is a dedicated father to two teenage daughters, whose well-being is paramount to him. “Seeing my girls during such a difficult time was incredibly tough. I wasn’t sure how to move forward as a father,” he confessed. Yet, he finds solace in the unity that emerged within his family following the incident, recognising that sometimes tragedy can catalyse healing and strength.
In sharing his story, Tobias Dorzon exemplifies resilience and determination. His journey is not just about recovering from physical injuries but also about reclaiming his life, career, and passion for cooking. As he steps back into the culinary arena, the chef serves as an inspiration for many, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can rebuild and thrive.
