In a significant move to re-establish its drink menu, Panera Bread has introduced two new energy drinks, dubbed Energy Refreshers, just a few months after settling lawsuits related to its much-discussed Charged Lemonades. This latest offering aims to provide customers with a healthier caffeine option while promising an enjoyable, flavourful experience.

The Energy Refreshers are available in two enticing flavours: Dragonfruit Sunset and Passionfruit Paradise. Both beverages have a considerably lower caffeine content compared to the Charged Lemonades, which had been at the centre of controversy for their high caffeine levels. The Dragonfruit Sunset drink features a blend of pineapple and tropical dragonfruit, with caffeine amounts at 28 mg in a 20 oz. serving and 42 mg in a 30 oz. cup. In contrast, the Passionfruit Paradise is a mix of passionfruit, guava, and orange, with slightly elevated caffeine levels of 44 mg in the 30 oz. serving.
These new drinks come with a cautionary warning indicating that they are not suitable for children, pregnant or nursing women, or those sensitive to caffeine. Panera Bread clearly aims to emphasise responsible consumption after the significant backlash it faced over the Charged Lemonade, which contained a staggering 390 mg of caffeine in its 30 oz. version.
In addition to the Energy Refreshers, Panera is launching two new non-caffeinated drinks, referred to as Frescas, which are available in Cherry Lime and Strawberry Basil Lemonade flavours. Described as “infused with real fruit”, these beverages are part of the restaurant’s broader strategy to redefine its beverage offerings and cater to a wider audience.
Mark Shambura, Panera’s Chief Marketing Officer, expressed excitement over the new launches, asserting that the company is focused on combining bold flavours with high-quality ingredients to redefine the premium beverage experience at Panera. He emphasised that the new drinks are crafted to invigorate and delight customers, providing options to both energise and refresh.
Alongside the new beverages, Panera is introducing a unique bakery item — the Dubai Style Chocolate Pistachio Cookie — featuring a rich chocolate base filled with pistachio cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce, and topped with crunchy pistachio pieces. This addition complements the beverage lineup, aiming to enhance the overall customer experience at the chain.
The introduction of these new products comes after Panera faced numerous lawsuits over its Charged Lemonade. The high caffeine content of the drink, which initially gained popularity in late 2022, raised concerns when customers highlighted the potential health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. After the lawsuits concluded in July 2025, which included cases relating to the drink’s possible adverse effects, the chain decided to discontinue the Charged Lemonade in May 2024.
The situation surrounding the Charged Lemonade prompted the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to take a closer look at such beverages. In October 2023, the FDA announced it was gathering information regarding the drink’s caffeine levels and subsequently advised that adults should limit their caffeine intake to no more than 400 mg daily. This heightened scrutiny led to added warnings at dining establishments, noting that energy drinks are not recommended for specific demographics, including children and teenagers.
As Panera Bread continues to navigate the landscape after the Charged Lemonade fallout, the introduction of the Energy Refreshers and Frescas marks a strategic pivot towards a more health-conscious approach. By offering drinks that employ real fruit and lower caffeine levels, the company appears committed to prioritising customer safety and satisfaction.
The recent launch reflects a broader trend in the food and beverage industry, where consumers are increasingly seeking quality over quantity, particularly concerning caffeinated options. With its new offerings, Panera hopes to regain customer trust and captivate a new audience looking for revitalising yet moderate energising beverages.
As the restaurant chain embarks on this new chapter, time will tell how well the Energy Refreshers and Frescas are received. Nevertheless, Panera Bread seems poised to make a strong impression with these innovative additions to its menu, setting a precedent for responsible choices in the world of energy drinks.
