According to public information officer Chad Rogers, it is believed that Skylar left her home on foot, wearing a distinctive tie-dye dress and carrying an iPad. The circumstances surrounding how she managed to leave the house remain unclear, as it is not known who else might have been present at the time of her disappearance.

The police department’s social media updates indicate that the search effort involved multiple resources, including K9 units, drones, and search teams from the Houston Police Department. By 12:40 p.m., more than three hours after Skylar was reported missing, the active search continued with no immediate leads. The K9 teams tracked her scent to a retention pond, which raised alarms among the search crew.

As the situation developed, Skylar’s iPad was also located in proximity to where the dogs lost her scent, directing the investigation towards the water. A dive team from the Houston Police Department joined the operation. Tragically, around 2:45 p.m., Skylar’s body was recovered from the pond.
During a press briefing, Officer Rogers noted that it remains uncertain whether the pond was Skylar’s intended destination. “There’s no indication that leading up to her death. We are still reviewing surveillance footage from neighbours to better understand her path prior to reaching the pond,” he explained.
The sobering reality of the dangers faced by children, particularly those with autism, was highlighted by Rogers. He stated, “This isn’t a new issue and unfortunately, time and again we see the tragic consequences that can occur when children with autism are near bodies of water.” He elaborated on the police team’s proactive approach, stating, “Our drone team knew the risks associated with water and prioritised searching there.”
Online, the police department received numerous comments urging them to focus on the water during the search. “We were aware of the importance of this and our first targets were indeed the water areas,” Rogers affirmed, addressing the community’s concerns while acknowledging the dreadful outcome.
This incident has sparked an outpouring of grief from the local community and raised awareness about the vulnerabilities of children on the autism spectrum. Many have shared their condolences and concerns regarding the safety of children, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and prevention measures in similar situations. As investigations continue, authorities hope to shed light on the events leading up to this tragic loss.
