Officer Cody Thomas, a father of four, has returned home following a serious head-on collision in Wyoming earlier this month that tragically resulted in the death of another driver. The incident occurred on Sunday, 1 March, around 8:40 p.m. as Thomas was on his way back to the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas.

Chief Sean Bissett of the Buffalo Police Department confirmed the details of the accident, stating that the collision involved two vehicles on Wyoming Highway 59. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, a Volkswagen Tiguan driven by 36-year-old Andrew Winter was traveling northbound when it veered off the road to the right. After overcorrecting to the left, Winter crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a Toyota Tundra driven by Thomas, aged 39.
Winter, a resident of Torrington, Wyoming, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Thomas was airlifted to a medical facility in Casper due to the severity of his injuries. The Buffalo Police Department has announced that an investigation into the collision is currently underway.
In a recent update, Chief Bissett expressed relief that Officer Thomas is now back home with his family, stating, “We are very thankful to report that Officer Thomas is now home recovering with his family.” He praised Thomas for his dedication to the community, noting that he is well-respected and actively involved in both his church and community activities. Bissett remarked, “He has already proven himself to be a tremendous asset to our department, and we are all looking forward to the day he returns to the street.”
For five years prior to his role at the Buffalo Police Department, Thomas worked with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, serving as a deputy in the jail before joining the police force last August. He completed his field training before enrolling in the law enforcement academy.
To support Thomas during his recovery, Chantel Alcaraz, who identified herself as his sister-in-law, launched a GoFundMe campaign. Through this initiative, she aims to assist his family as they navigate the impact of the accident. Alcaraz described Thomas as “the most selfless man, father, and husband I know,” detailing his willingness to help others, even strangers, and expressing the profound effects this accident has had on their lives. As of 12 March, the fundraising effort had garnered over £12,000 in donations.
In addition to the campaign for Thomas, a separate GoFundMe was established for Winter’s family to provide support for his wife and their three children during this challenging time.
Following the crash, Alcaraz provided updates on Thomas’s condition, noting that although he was experiencing soreness and fatigue, his spirits remained high. “He’s very happy to be safe back at home,” she shared.
