In a heartwarming turn of events, Jim and Donna Davis have been reunited with their beloved dog Mia after an astonishing 18 days of wandering through the wilderness of Glacial Park Conservation Area in Illinois. The goldendoodle’s extraordinary adventure began on February 12, when a tangle of leashes during a family walk spooked her, prompting her to dash into the woods.

The Davis couple quickly mobilised a network of family and friends to help locate Mia within the sprawling 3,400-acre conservation area. Recognising the difficulty of finding their frightened pet, they also enlisted the assistance of Best Furry Friend Search and Rescue and the drone team at SmithicAir to aid in their efforts to bring Mia home.

Linda Hartman, a seasoned volunteer involved in the search, described the challenges of locating Mia as she instinctually slipped into “survival mode”. This behaviour made her wary of unfamiliar scents and sights, causing her to perceive potential rescuers as threats. Hartman explained that during these stressful situations, dogs often regard the world around them as full of hazards.
The first significant break in the search occurred on the evening of the first day when Michael Smith, operating a thermal drone, managed to spot Mia. However, due to the time constraints that day, the Davises were unable to secure a permit to set a humane trap to retrieve her. Undeterred, they planned to continue their search the following day.
In the absence of trapping facilities, the team set about strategically placing food stations around the area. Cameras set up by volunteers captured Mia visiting these stations, though she invariably fled before rescuers could close the gap. “It was heartbreaking to be so close,” said Donna, expressing the emotional rollercoaster as they watched their pet come within reach, only to escape once again.
After nearly two weeks of searching, the Davises finally received permission to set up a trap specifically designed to catch Mia. Their patience and persistence paid off when, just two days later, they received the thrilling news that Mia had been safely caught.
Remarkably, despite her lengthy ordeal in the wilderness, Mia emerged in relatively good health. Reports indicate that she had lost only one pound since her last weigh-in and suffered from minor soft tissue injuries, which are expected to heal with proper care.
Contributing to Mia’s successful recovery, Smith highlighted the collective effort of everyone involved in the search, calling it “Team Mia”. He emphasised that it was a united front that led to her rescue, with each member playing an invaluable role.
The heartwarming reunion serves as a poignant reminder of the bond between dogs and their owners, as well as the power of community engagement during challenging times. The Davises are immensely grateful to all who participated in the search and are relieved to have their furry family member back where she belongs.
