A tragic fire in Austin, Texas, has led to the deaths of three children, believed to be from the same family, and left three others with serious burn injuries. The incident took place early in the morning on March 11, as the Austin Fire Department (AFD) responded to emergency calls shortly before 1 a.m.

Division Chief Wayne Parrish of the AFD provided details about the blaze during a press briefing. Upon arrival at the apartment complex on Burleson Road, firefighters observed flames billowing from several windows of a two-storey unit. As crews entered the building, they were informed that there were still people trapped inside. Tragically, they discovered three children who had succumbed to the flames.

The identities of the deceased children have yet to be released, but authorities have confirmed they are believed to belong to the same family. The fire also resulted in critical injuries to two adults and another child, who managed to escape the fire on their own. These individuals were quickly transported to nearby medical facilities, with the adults taken to Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas and the child being relocated to the San Antonio Burn Center.
According to Chief Parrish, all injured parties were found outside the apartment complex after managing to escape the blaze, highlighting the harrowing nature of their experience. A firefighter who was part of the response team also sustained minor injuries but has since been treated and released.
Local residents expressed shock and sadness at the unfolding tragedy. Douglas Smith, a neighbour, recounted witnessing one of the fire survivors in distress. “It was pretty terrible,” he remarked, illustrating the impact the incident had on the community.
Fortunately, the fire was contained to the single apartment unit where it originated, enabling firefighters to extinguish it relatively quickly. Parrish noted that the building’s design included fire stops in the attic, which played a crucial role in preventing the flames from spreading to nearby units.
The fire has resulted in significant disruption, with residents from approximately 30 other units now displaced due to the incident. The timeline for when these residents will be allowed to return remains uncertain, adding an additional layer of distress to the situation.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, Chief Parrish stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest any interference or foul play. The inquiry will aim to determine how the blaze started and to provide answers to the affected families and the community.
The loss of life and the injuries sustained have left a heavy heart in Austin, as families and friends mourn the children who tragically lost their lives. Community support will be vital in the coming weeks as those affected begin the process of recovery and rebuilding following this devastating event.
