A mother has initiated legal proceedings against United Airlines following an incident during a flight in April 2025, where her daughter sustained severe burns from hot water. Miriam Landynski, who was travelling with her family from Newark International Airport to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport, is seeking compensation for her daughter’s permanent injuries, as outlined in a complaint filed on 27 February.

According to the lawsuit, the incident occurred when a flight attendant handed an uncovered cup of boiling water to one of Landynski’s other children. The cup tipped over and spilled onto her four-year-old daughter, resulting in serious burns and scarring. The complaint asserts that the United Airlines crew member disregarded “all safety and common-sense standards” during the flight.
The lawsuit claims that the injuries her daughter sustained were not only physical but also have inflicted emotional distress. Landynski states that her child has been left with lasting scars and has suffered “great pain, agony, and mental anguish” as a consequence of the accident. The family has reportedly faced significant financial strain due to medical expenses associated with treating the injuries.

In the legal document, Landynski argues that the incident has led to substantial economic losses, as they have been required to spend considerable sums on healthcare for their daughter. More concerningly, she believes that the mental and emotional impacts of the accident will continue to affect her daughter’s quality of life moving forward.

The filing indicates that Landynski’s daughter has been deprived of her enjoyment of life, alongside her interests and pursuits, an enduring consequence of the neglect she believes was displayed by the airline. Landynski alleges that United has not adequately demonstrated that its actions did not contribute to the incident and maintains that the airline is liable for the damages incurred.
Furthermore, she insists that it is the responsibility of the airline to ensure the safety and well-being of its passengers throughout the flight. Citing this duty of care, Landynski has called for a judgement against United Airlines, which she expects to be determined at trial. She seeks compensation that includes medical fees and additional costs incurred as a direct result of the incident.
The case has raised awareness regarding the safety standards that must be adhered to by airline staff, especially concerning the handling of hot liquids on board. Such incidents underscore the importance of rigorous training for cabin crew to prevent accidents that can lead to both physical injuries and long-term emotional damage.
As the legal process unfolds, People magazine has reached out to both Landynski’s attorney and United Airlines for comments on the case. However, as of now, there has been no immediate response from either party regarding the allegations made in the lawsuit.
The outcome of this case may have broader implications for airline safety protocols and could lead to a reevaluation of how airlines manage passenger safety, particularly when it comes to the service of hot beverages during flights.
