British actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin is stepping into the shoes of one of the most beloved figures in literary and cinematic history, Sherlock Holmes, in the new series ‘Young Sherlock’ directed by Guy Ritchie. At 28 years old, Fiennes Tiffin finds himself in a dream role, as he embodies a younger version of the renowned detective. A lifelong admirer of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, he feels well-prepared to take on such an iconic character. “Sherlock is a character I’ve always known and loved. To bring him to life on such a big scale with Guy Ritchie is a dream,” he shared in an interview.
Growing up in a household influenced by a passion for detective stories, Fiennes Tiffin credits his father, George Tiffin, for nurturing this interest. “My dad has always been a fan, and he passed that love on to me and my brother,” he explained. The duo particularly enjoyed Ritchie’s earlier film adaptations and various other portrayals, including the acclaimed BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch. “If I close my eyes and imagine Sherlock, I see Benedict Cumberbatch. I’ve watched that series three times,” he admitted.
Despite his familiarity with the character, Fiennes Tiffin opted not to revisit previous adaptations while preparing for his role. “I’ve naturally digested so much Sherlock already, so I didn’t want to watch anything else,” he said. Instead, he was keen to focus on charting the unique narrative being crafted for ‘Young Sherlock’.
One of the intriguing aspects of the series is its exploration of the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his future nemesis, James Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn. The dynamic is complex, starting from friendship and evolving into rivalry. “Mapping out all of those journeys was really interesting because we know they won’t remain friends,” he noted. Fiennes Tiffin highlighted the challenge of portraying a Sherlock who is still developing his detective skills, adding, “We know he will solve mysteries, but at this point, he’s not a detective yet.”
Working on a well-established character inevitably comes with pressure. Fiennes Tiffin acknowledged that while creating a brand-new character might lead to critique based on originality, portraying Sherlock brings with it the weight of public expectation. “The pressure and responsibility are there, but working with Guy alleviated some of that tension,” he said. “He has a way of creating a relaxed atmosphere that made it easier to focus and enjoy the process.”
Having previously collaborated with Ritchie on ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’, Fiennes Tiffin is familiar with the director’s creative style. He described the series as fundamentally “fun,” remarking that even during the challenging moments, the focus was on enjoyment. “Whenever people ask me to describe it in one word, I want to come up with something more intellectual, but it’s really just fun,” he explained.
