Bela Perez faced an unexpected travel ordeal after her flight from Barcelona to New York City was cancelled due to a winter storm in the United States. What started as a routine return journey quickly escalated into a chaotic rerouting that took her and her friends far from their intended destination.

Initially, Perez and her friends were rebooked on a flight with a layover in London. However, upon arriving at the airport, they received shocking news. Perez and one of her companions discovered that they had been removed from the flight along with several other passengers. Confused about their options, the group was instructed to contact the original airline for assistance.

According to Perez, the situation worsened when the airline redirected them on a new route that involved flying through Morocco. This unexpected change added to their already stressful travel plans, as they departed approximately three hours later than scheduled. The delay created a tight timeline for their connection in Morocco.
Upon arrival in Morocco, the passengers were faced with the daunting task of changing terminals in a hurry. Unfortunately, despite raising their concerns with airline staff about the timing, their requests went unheeded. “When we asked to be let off the plane first, they refused and insisted that we had ample time to make our connecting flight, which was not the case,” Perez recounted.
The group had to navigate through extensive airport procedures, including a bus transfer, security checks, and a frantic race across the terminal. They ultimately boarded their flight to New York as the last passengers. Throughout the ordeal, Perez was acutely aware of the repercussions of potentially missing their connection. “If we had missed that flight, the next one out of Morocco was eight hours later, and it would have meant flying back to Madrid before we could even head to New York,” she explained.
Adding to the frustration was the financial burden imposed by the airline’s changes. Perez noted that they had to pay $230 for the checked bag with the new airline—a stark contrast to the original fee of £80 with the initial carrier. She had been assured that the airline would cover the difference as compensation for their inconvenience. However, when she followed up after returning home, she was told that the airline would not honour that promise.
Seeking to share her experience, Perez took to TikTok, posting a video captioned, “POV: we just got to the airport and found out our airline took us off our flight from Barcelona to NYC and rebooked us on a flight to Africa.” She hoped that the exposure might lead to a resolution; however, she has expressed disappointment in the airline’s lack of response.
Despite gaining traction on social media, Perez claims that the airline has continued to refuse any form of compensation. “They did nothing to address our situation after my video went viral. It’s incredibly frustrating to be ignored,” she said.
The story has resonated with many, highlighting concerns around the responsibilities of airlines to their passengers amidst unexpected changes. As travel disruptions become more common, both airlines and travellers may need to reassess communication and compensation policies to enhance transparency and support for those caught in similar situations.
As of now, Perez and her friends remain hopeful that their voices will finally be heard, and that the airline will take the necessary steps to resolve their grievances.
