Man Missed His Bus, Then Disappeared Only to Be Found Dead in an Alley. Friend Says That’s Only Part of the Story (Exclusive)

John Nelson, a 56-year-old man from Minnesota, was recently found deceased in Nashville, raising questions surrounding his tragic journey. According to his friend, Erika Klasse, Nelson was attempting to return home after missing his connecting bus and subsequently faced unfortunate circumstances that ultimately led to his untimely demise.

Nelson was reported missing by friends and family after he did not return from his travels. His disappearance followed a long standing battle with various life challenges, exacerbated by mental health issues. Classe emphasised that Nelson was not defined by his struggles, telling PEOPLE, “He had a home and he was trying to make his way back.”

Hailing from Minnesota, Nelson had been living with Klasse for nearly a decade in her camper, where he found solace and support from her family. Klasse’s children referred to him as “uncle” and he formed a close connection with her father as well. This stability brought Nelson some peace, especially in recent years as he worked to overcome previous difficulties.

In January, however, his troubled past resurfaced when he was detained by police due to an outstanding warrant from New Mexico, where he had previously resided. Although the charges were subsequently dismissed, Nelson found himself on the streets after being released. With the aid of a family member, he acquired a Greyhound bus ticket back to Minnesota, but the journey involved multiple transfers, one of which took him through Nashville.

Klasse recounted that she maintained contact with Nelson throughout his travels, and during this time, she noticed concerning changes in his behaviour. He had ceased taking his medication for his mental health and was consuming alcohol. After arriving in Nashville on February 13, the situation deteriorated further when, while waiting for his next bus, he stepped outside for a cigarette and missed his ride.

Despite her attempts to reassure him to stay at the station, Nelson was ultimately asked to leave due to overstaying his welcome. By that point, Klasse stated that his mental clarity had diminished significantly. The final conversation she had with him revealed that he was sitting outside the station in a robe and slippers, drinking a beer.

When he failed to board the next available bus, Klasse and his niece, Ashley Cockman, became concerned and reported him missing to authorities in both Minnesota and Nashville. They utilised social media platforms to increase awareness but were met with silence for several days.

Tragically, on February 20, a local resident discovered Nelson’s body underneath a staircase in an alley. Attempts to revive him by emergency personnel were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Surveillance footage revealed that he had approached the staircase alone shortly before 1 a.m. on that day. Officials confirmed that no foul play was suspected in his death.

The heartbreaking news reached Klasse and Cockman through social media, where users noted a story about a man fitting Nelson’s description. Further developments revealed that he had sought medical assistance on February 17 for symptoms including a sore throat, yet was discharged shortly thereafter.

In reflecting on Nelson’s life, Cockman noted that he had worked diligently to turn things around, steering clear of legal troubles and substance abuse since 2019. Her sorrow was compounded by the fact that Nelson’s cherished pet rabbit, named Ice Cream, had also passed away since his death, symbolising another layer of loss for the family.

Klasse poignantly remarked, “Everybody makes mistakes, but he was working through them.” She had remained a consistent source of support for Nelson throughout his struggles, even encouraging him to reach out for help when needed. “I told him, ‘You’re not a good criminal’ and you need to let me know how I can help you, because I always will,” she recounted.

The tragic ending to John Nelson’s story serves as a sobering reminder of the difficulties faced by those battling personal challenges, and the importance of community support. As family and friends mourn his passing, they hope that his story may inspire greater compassion and understanding for those navigating similar adversities.
