In a significant development in a cold case that has haunted a family for nearly 16 years, authorities in Georgia have arrested a suspect tied to the tragic death of Sandra Robinson. The heartbreaking incident occurred on March 17, 2010, when Robinson, a 32-year-old mother of four, was fatally stabbed while working at a local store in Douglas.

On March 2, 2023, officials from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Douglas Police Department apprehended 58-year-old Willie James Jr. of Wayne County. He has been charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and Aggravated Assault, and is currently being held at the Coffee County Jail.
Robinson was a highly regarded member of her community, known as a “loving daughter, sister, and devoted mother.” At the time of her death, the circumstances surrounding her killing remained a mystery, with investigators unable to identify a suspect despite extensive efforts. Following a request from her son, Trey Robinson, who became a certified police officer in 2016, the case was reexamined. Trey has long sought justice for his mother, motivated by the profound impact her untimely passing had on him and their family. During a press conference announcing the arrest, Trey expressed his relief and gratitude that progress has finally been made in the investigation.
“Whenever my mum passed away, this was life-changing for me. Not only for me, but for my entire family,” he said, reflecting on their close relationship. Trey also highlighted how his mother’s death inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement, stating that he has dedicated himself to fighting for justice on her behalf.
The case, which had gone cold for years, came back into focus as Trey submitted a formal request under the Coleman-Baker Act, a legal provision that allows family members to seek a renewal of cold case investigations. This request prompted the GBI and local police to take another look at the evidence surrounding Robinson’s murder.
At the press conference, Brian Whitby, special agent in charge of the GBI Office of Special Investigations, stated that the team had tirelessly pursued every lead in the case. Through continued testing and forensic analysis, they were able to establish a connection between James and the crime scene, underscoring the importance of modern forensic science in solving such cases.
Marilyn Bennett, the District Attorney for the Waycross Judicial Circuit, also addressed the attendees at the conference. She called James’ arrest a significant milestone in what has been an arduous investigation. “Our office looks forward to working with all of our law enforcement partners to bring closure to Miss Robinson’s family and the community,” she said, stressing the collaborative efforts behind the renewed investigation.
While the investigation remains open, officials have acknowledged the contributions made by various law enforcement agencies in bringing about this development, including the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, and several local police departments.
Trey Robinson further expressed his emotions during the press conference, noting that the timing of the arrest, coinciding closely with the anniversary of his mother’s death, was particularly poignant. “I said to myself I was not going to go another year without knowing who did this to my mum,” he remarked, highlighting his determination to seek justice.
The community has shown an outpouring of support for the Robinson family, recognising the enduring pain of loss they have experienced since that fateful day in 2010.
