Zakk Wylde has announced the release of a poignant tribute to his late friend and mentor, Ozzy Osbourne. The new track, titled “Ozzy’s Song,” is set to be the final piece on Wylde’s forthcoming album with his band Black Label Society, entitled ‘Engines of Demolition,’ which is scheduled for release on 27 March 2024.

The song carries a special significance for Wylde, who was a longstanding collaborator with Osbourne, having joined the Ozzy Osbourne Band in 1987. Sadly, the iconic rock star passed away from a heart attack at the age of 76 on 22 July 2025, shortly after his farewell concert, “Back to the Beginning,” in which Wylde also participated.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Wylde shared some insight into how the song received its title. He revealed that it was inspired by his wife, Barbaranne, who would refer to different songs by their artist names. “Whenever we were driving in the truck, she’d say, ‘Hey, put on Ozzy’s song again,’” he explained, leading to the affectionate tribute to Osbourne.
When it came time to compose the track, Wylde found himself reflecting on their unique relationship and the memories they shared. He recounted a moment in the early hours after laying Osbourne to rest, when he happened upon a book about the legendary musician in his home library. It was at that moment, headphones on and lost in thought, that he began to pen the lyrics which, as he pointed out, would likely never have materialised had Osbourne still been alive.
Musically, “Ozzy’s Song” is characterised by its heartfelt combination of acoustic guitar and piano, culminating in one of the signature electric guitar solos that only Wylde can deliver. The track is not only a tribute to Osbourne but also a broader message of resilience in the face of loss. Wylde expressed a hope that listeners who have experienced their own heartbreak would find solace in the lyrics. “If the song resonates with someone who has lost a parent or a loved one, then that’s what truly matters,” he remarked.
Wylde reflected on the impact Osbourne had on his life, likening the late rocker to a family member. Both Osbourne and Wylde’s father, who passed away in 2009, exhibited a remarkable strength that Wylde admired. “They didn’t even have to say anything. Both were hard as nails and resilient,” he noted, emphasising that Osbourne’s determination to perform right up until the end was truly inspiring.
Throughout his career, Wylde has learned valuable lessons from Osbourne, particularly about perseverance and strength. “It was just the fortitude… the resilience to keep going,” he stated, drawing parallels between his experiences with Osbourne and those from his own father’s life.
As Wylde contemplates his position as a leading figure in the guitar world, especially in the wake of so many musical icons passing away, he expressed gratitude for his career. “That torch of inspiration just keeps… you pass it on. That’s what life’s all about,” he shared, acknowledging his role in continuing the legacy of his predecessors.
In advice to emerging artists, Wylde emphasised the importance of commitment and passion in pursuing a career in music. “Should I put all my eggs in one basket? Yeah, you should,” he advised, encouraging young musicians to fully invest themselves in their art without looking back.
The culmination of Wylde’s creative journey over the past four years is embodied in ‘Engines of Demolition.’ He described the album as a collection of experiences that have significantly impacted him, encouraging listeners to immerse themselves in music that moves them. “If it moves you, then that’s what you should be doing,” he concluded.
