Austin Shooter’s Social Media Featured Hateful Posts: Reports

A tragic shooting incident erupted outside Buford’s bar in Austin, Texas, early on March 1, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving over a dozen others injured. Authorities have identified the shooter as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, who was fatally shot by police during the incident.

Reports indicate that Diagne was exhibiting signs of extremist beliefs, which were evident from several troubling posts made on social media prior to the attack. His online presence reportedly displayed an array of offensive content, including derogatory remarks against various groups, deep-seated misogyny, and anti-religious sentiments.

According to officials, Diagne was wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with “Property of Allah” paired with a shirt featuring the Iranian flag at the time of the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security noted that Diagne, a naturalised citizen, had initially arrived in the United States on a tourist visa in 2000 before later marrying a U.S. citizen.

Social media platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter), contained a plethora of hateful posts associated with Diagne’s account. Notably, some posts included disparaging remarks about Christian beliefs, particularly taunting the theological concept of the Holy Trinity. In other troubling commentary, he unleashed a derogatory comment directed at a woman, deploying an offensive term for Hispanic immigrants.

Further exploration of his posts revealed deeply misogynistic views. One such statement claimed, “Women produce babies. What do men produce? SPERM and have built everything in this world,” reflecting his disdain for women’s roles beyond childbearing. Diagne also expressed vehement criticism of political figures, notably denouncing former President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “evil.”

The timing of this violent outburst is particularly notable, occurring just a day after the United States and Israel executed military strikes on Iran, reportedly resulting in the death of the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities are investigating whether this incident was in any way connected to these geopolitical tensions.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, two individuals were confirmed dead, with a third succumbing to injuries after being taken off life support. The victims have been identified as Ryder Harrington, 19; Savitha Shan, 21; and Jorge Pederson, 30. The Austin community has been left reeling from the loss and the senseless act of violence that has marred their city.
