Hailey Bieber, the founder of the skincare brand Rhode and a prominent figure in the beauty industry, has opened up about her unexpected pregnancy and a significant medical condition she faced prior to conceiving her son, Jack Blues. The 29-year-old shared her experiences during an appearance on the SHE MD podcast, a discussion that provided insights into the challenges she encountered on her journey to motherhood.

In a candid conversation, Bieber revealed that her pregnancy was a surprise. Despite her doctor’s prior recommendations to monitor or potentially undergo surgery for her condition before attempting to conceive, life took an unexpected turn. “I told her like, ‘Don’t get pregnant!’” recalled her obstetrician and podcast co-host Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. Hailey expressed disbelief at the news of her pregnancy, noting, “I magically got pregnant.”

Bieber disclosed that she was diagnosed with a uterine septum, a condition that poses increased risks of miscarriage and preterm delivery. Dr. Aliabadi elaborated on the condition, explaining that a uterine septum is a congenital anomaly in which a wall of tissue divides the uterine cavity. “You can have a mild, moderate, or severe septum. If it’s less than 1 cm, it’s mild; if it’s between 1 to 2 cm, it’s moderate,” she explained. Hailey expressed her belief that her septum was moderate in severity.

The prevalence of uterine septum is estimated to affect 1 to 3% of women. For those with moderate forms of the condition, the risks associated with pregnancy can be daunting. Dr. Aliabadi indicated that such women face an approximate 25 to 40% risk of miscarriage and a 10 to 20% chance of preterm delivery. This information understandably raised concerns for Hailey and her family as they prepared for their new arrival.
Reflecting on her experience, Bieber shared, “Which I think was our bigger scare,” referring to the potential complications as her pregnancy progressed. Yet, despite the challenges, she maintained a positive outlook, stating, “I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine.” This optimism resonated with Dr. Aliabadi, who remembered feeling hopeful as well.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of supportive relationships during challenging medical experiences. Hailey’s faith in her body and her medical team during her pregnancy journey helped them navigate uncertainties. “And I never forget, as I was telling her, ‘Well, these are the risks,’” Dr. Aliabadi recalled, “and she looked at me, she’s like, ‘You know what? I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine.’”
Fortunately for Bieber, her pregnancy culminated in the birth of a healthy baby boy, Jack Blues, who is now 16 months old. This outcome reinforces the notion that while medical conditions may present risks, with the right support and care, it is possible to navigate these challenges successfully.
Hailey’s candidness about her experiences not only raises awareness about uterine septum but also highlights the emotional aspects of pregnancy. Her story serves as a reminder of the complexities that many women face on their journeys to motherhood.
As her narrative unfolds, it encourages discussions surrounding reproductive health and the significance of seeking professional advice while also trusting one’s instincts. The journey to parenthood is unique for everyone, and Hailey’s experience underscores the importance of support, education, and resilience.
