In a joyful twist on traditional wedding themes, a Canadian couple has created a vibrant celebration of love completely tailored to their unique vision. Shannon Savoie, 32, and Tyler Dyck, also 32, exchanged vows in Kelowna, British Columbia, with a wedding that boldly embraced a rainbow theme.

Shannon has long held a fascination for rainbows, considering them to be a source of joy and beauty. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved rainbows,” she shared with PEOPLE. “It had always been my dream to have rainbow everything — car, house, wedding, etc. Tyler was amazing enough to help me achieve my dream.”

The couple faced challenges in planning their nuptials, particularly as Shannon had hoped her late mother would be involved in orchestrating the details. Despite the heartache of her mother’s passing two years prior, Shannon and Tyler took charge of arranging their special day in a DIY manner, allowing their creativity to shine. “It was hard to have a clear vision without her, as neither Tyler nor I had been to many weddings before,” Shannon explained. “So we tried to have fun with it.”

To transform the reception venue into a kaleidoscope of colour, Shannon and her eight bridesmaids devised an array of rainbow centrepieces while adorning tables and chairs with vibrant ribbons and tulle. Alongside brightly coloured paper lanterns strung from the ceiling, the couple made sure that rainbows could be found at every corner. “I tried to incorporate rainbows wherever I could while keeping to a budget,” she noted.

To further foster the vibrant spirit of their wedding, the bridesmaids were given a specific colour swatch to work from, allowing them the freedom to choose their own dress styles. “I had hoped they’d find something they could wear again,” Shannon said, reflecting on the difficulty of sourcing bright dresses locally. “Turns out a variety of bright colours isn’t super common in our local mall!”

The result was nothing short of stunning; the bridesmaids posed together in a line, creating a striking rainbow visual that truly encapsulated the day’s theme. Shannon, for her part, opted for a custom dress designed by Firefly Path, featuring a beautiful strapless sweetheart bodice adorned with glittery rainbow colours, topped with a white skirt and rainbow tulle layer. “I had been following her creations online for years and always hoped she would make my dress,” she said about the designer, JoEllen Elam Conway.

For her unique bridal look, Shannon accessorised with rainbow-striped knee socks and colourful New Balance sneakers, completing the ensemble with playful space buns in her hair. Tyler, meanwhile, chose a classic black wardrobe for himself and his groomsmen, complemented by colourful ties that harmonised with the bridesmaids’ dresses. “He thought black on black with a white tie looked cool,” Shannon remarked.

In keeping with the wedding’s joyful theme, the couple designed a striking wedding cake featuring a white four-tier structure with rainbow-inspired ribbon accents. The interior was filled with marbled rainbow layers, a delightful visual that tied in perfectly with the overall aesthetic of the day. “It was so cool,” said Shannon, as she reflected on this dashing addition to their celebration.

While reminiscing about their wedding day, Shannon acknowledged the absence of her mother, but expressed confidence that her mother would have felt immense pride in their colourful celebration. “I think she would have been very proud, and she never would have stopped gushing over how perfect my dress turned out,” Shannon expressed.

The vibrant photographs from the wedding now occupy pride of place in their home, and Shannon finds joy every time she passes by them. “Whatever style is ‘in’ for weddings lately is so greywashed and dreary, but I stop to smile at our photos. Vibrant colours just radiate happiness,” she said, embracing her vision of a joyous celebration.

Shannon’s heartfelt message to other couples is to break free from traditional norms and instead create a wedding that reflects their unique love story. “Weddings don’t have to be rigid — they can be whatever you want them to be,” she shared. “For how much they can cost, you better do what makes you happy instead of what society has decided is ‘normal.’ It’s a party to celebrate love between two people, not to impress others.”
