Val Chmerkovskiy, a prominent dancer and choreographer from the popular television show *Dancing with the Stars (DWTS)*, has recently encountered health challenges while embarking on the DWTS Live tour. The 39-year-old shared a heartfelt update on Instagram from a hospital bed in Peoria, Illinois, revealing that he was undergoing treatment for vertigo, a condition that had significantly affected his ability to perform.

In a video posted on Sunday, March 1, Chmerkovskiy explained his situation, noting that he had been grappling with vertigo for the preceding days. Despite his condition, he managed to complete a show but sought medical advice afterward. “I’ve just been having vertigo for the past couple of days,” he stated. “I was able to get through the show and then we ran some tests. Once that little crystal in your equilibrium goes out, it’s really hard to get it back in.”

Chmerkovskiy attributed his discomfort to issues with his vestibular system, which controls balance. He mentioned the sensation of spinning, which made it difficult for him to maintain his composure, especially while travelling on the bus. “I woke up and I just couldn’t get myself together,” he confessed, expressing hope for a day off to recover, with intentions to return by Tuesday.
In his post, he reassured fans that this was merely a “small hiccup” in an otherwise busy tour schedule. Accompanying his video update, Chmerkovskiy shared that he had undergone blood tests and been monitored for his vital signs, underscoring the seriousness with which he approached his health.
According to the Mayo Clinic, vertigo is described as a sudden sensation of spinning or moving, which can be caused by disturbances in the inner ear. The condition often stems from the displacement of small crystals within the inner ear, affecting balance and equilibrium. Chmerkovskiy’s remarks reflected elements of medical understanding, suggesting that he was keen to educate himself about his symptoms.
Support has poured in from fellow DWTS cast members and fans alike, with many expressing their concern and well-wishes in the comments section of his post. His wife, Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy, along with former season 34 contestant Dylan Efron, sent their messages of encouragement. Efron, who has experienced a similar issue, empathised, stating, “Feeling for you Val, Vertigo is awful. It happened to me right before DWTS but it healed quickly.”
Prior to his hospitalisation, the official DWTS tour page had already announced that Val would be unable to perform due to an “unforeseen and last-minute illness.” In another Instagram message, Chmerkovskiy apologised to the fans who had come to see the show, thanking his fellow cast members for their support during this challenging time. “Little bump in the road, I’ll be good to go ASAP,” he promised.
Chmerkovskiy further added, “It takes quite literally me not being able to stand on my feet to keep me off that stage. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t make it tonight.” His dedication to his craft and fans highlights the commitment he has towards his performances and the wellbeing of his team.
As the DWTS Live tour continues, it is set to perform next at the Miller High Life Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, March 3. Fans are hopeful for a swift recovery, eager to see Chmerkovskiy return to the stage and continue showcasing his talent. His proactive approach to health and transparent communication serves as an example for both fans and fellow performers.
