During a previous interview with The New York Times in April, the 46-year-old comedian indicated that he was contemplating a shift away from stand-up comedy to explore various creative avenues. This raised questions among fans about whether he would be stepping down from live performances altogether. However, during the latest interview, Bargatze reassured his audience that he is not abandoning his stand-up roots.
“I like experience. I think you learn the most from experience, so I kind of wanna dabble in everything, like, create all these kinds of things,” Bargatze explained. He elaborated that while he has achieved significant success in stand-up, he is eager to branch out into other creative fields.
Bargatze emphasised that he is currently on tour and has plans for future performances. “I’m not quitting stand-up right now,” he affirmed. However, he acknowledged that as he engages more deeply in various new projects, including film productions, balancing touring may become increasingly challenging. “There’s gonna be a point where it’s gonna get hard to travel on the road as we’re creating so much stuff,” he said.
One of the exciting new ventures for Bargatze is his role as host of the trivia game show, “The Greatest Average American,” which premiered on ABC in February. He expressed his passion for creating engaging content that resonates with audiences. “I just like creating things that I really want to involve an audience,” he noted about the show’s concept.
Bargatze detailed the genesis of the game show, highlighting his collaboration with producer John Quinn, a well-known figure in the game show landscape. “I had this idea kind of popping in my head, and then I got with John, who has created a lot of game shows. So it just kind of went rolling from there,” he explained.
In addition to his professional aspirations, the comedian shared personal updates about his family life. Bargatze recently relocated from Los Angeles back to his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, a decision he made to provide stability for his daughter, Harper, who is 13 years old. He believes that raising her in a more conventional environment, away from the entertainment industry, is beneficial.
“I moved back to Nashville about 10 years ago,” he recalled. “We live in a great neighbourhood. We’re in a cul-de-sac. No one’s really in entertainment that’s there. It’s people that have regular jobs.” He further elaborated on his intentions, stating, “She knows I work in entertainment. She sees parts of it. But overall, you know, she’s going to school. And I specifically moved home for her, for that.”
Bargatze’s commitment to his daughter and his plans for mentorship reflect a deep sense of responsibility and generosity. As he continues to forge his path in various creative spheres, he also hopes to inspire and guide the next generation of comedians and entertainers. “I want to help find the next generation of comedians, or actors…writers,” he added, aiming to support emerging talent with the wisdom gained from his own career experiences.
