American Girl, the cherished brand renowned for its historically themed dolls, has unveiled a modernised collection to commemorate its 40th anniversary. The new line, dubbed the Modern Eras collection, features updated versions of beloved characters such as Samantha, Felicity, Josefina, Addy, Kristin, and Molly, showcasing contemporary outfits and a smaller physique. However, this reimagining has ignited a wave of debate among fans, with some expressing concerns that the essence of the original dolls could be lost.

The launch was announced on February 11 by Mattel, the parent company of American Girl, and immediately garnered mixed reactions on social media. Critics voiced their displeasure, arguing that altering the dolls diverges from their educational purpose and the historical themes they represent. One outraged fan commented, “What?? Nooo, this ruins the whole point of the historical dolls!!” while another emphasised, “The reason we like the historical dolls is BECAUSE they aren’t from our times!”

The nostalgic charm of the original dolls was a significant factor for many collectors and fans. One concern raised pertains to the new body types of the dolls, which some critics describe as overly slim. One user remarked, “Why are they so skinny? Girls come in all sizes, and the neutral size of the old AG dolls ensured all girls felt good playing with them.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern regarding representation and inclusivity for young girls who engage with these toys.
In response to the backlash, Jamie Cygielman, Mattel’s global head of dolls, provided insight into the company’s intentions behind the redesign. In an interview with The New York Times, Cygielman asserted that the new dolls are “really meant to celebrate the original historical characters in a different form.” The dolls have been adapted to a height of 14.5 inches, diverging from the traditional 18-inch size. Cygielman explained that the change in size was primarily for “ease of play,” indicating a shift in design philosophy aimed at enhancing user interaction.
While many are voicing their concerns, some fans are embracing the modern approach. Emily Marks, an ardent follower of the brand, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “They still look like kids to me. I like that it’s an entry of more interest into the historical dolls.” Furthermore, several supporters on social media have welcomed the new additions, eager to incorporate them into their extensive collections.
Despite mixed reviews, Mattel reassured its audience that the original dolls and their narratives will continue to be available. Cygielman confirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining the traditional 18-inch dolls, along with the stories of history that accompany them. She mentioned the brand will still be producing “reissues of the original dolls,” while also exploring new storytelling avenues to engage fans of all ages.
The Modern Eras collection offers a fresh take on the beloved American Girl line, aiming to attract a younger demographic while celebrating the historical significance of its characters. The new dolls are now available for pre-order and are scheduled to begin shipping on May 1.
As the discussion around the redesign continues, it remains to be seen how the American Girl brand will navigate the balance between nostalgia and modernisation in the years to come. Whether these new creations will resonate with older fans or draw in a new generation remains an ongoing narrative, as Mattel seeks to redefine a classic franchise for contemporary audiences.
