**Missing Florida Man Rescued After Days Stuck in Quicksand-Like Mud**

In a remarkable turn of events, a 36-year-old man from Florida, identified as Andrew Giddens, has been rescued after being trapped in mud for several days. The harrowing incident commenced on Valentine’s Day, and Giddens was found on February 26 at a sand plant in Putnam County.

Giddens, who was last seen in Jacksonville, had become the subject of a missing persons report after friends expressed concerns about his mental health following a recent break-up. His last known communication was with his father on February 14, the day he was reported missing.

The rescue operation began when Deputy Derrick Holmes of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office discovered Giddens’ abandoned vehicle on February 23. Recognising the car from a prior incident involving Giddens trespassing at another property owned by Vulcan Materials Company, Holmes coordinated a search of the area, which included both ground and aerial efforts. However, initial searches proved fruitless.

Amid growing concerns, Giddens’ friends informed law enforcement about his mental struggles. Following this, the sheriff’s office escalated the search efforts, leading to his eventual discovery. On February 25, Giddens was found deep in mud resembling quicksand, close to a borrow pit at the Vulcan Sand Plant. He was reported to be “shoulder deep” in the substance, having survived without food or water for a significant time.

First responders, including teams from Clay County Fire Rescue and Palatka Fire Department, faced a challenging rescue due to the unstable nature of the mud. They spent between two to three hours carefully formulating a plan to extricate Giddens without putting themselves at risk of becoming trapped. Initial attempts involved throwing a rope, but when this did not succeed, the rescue team resorted to using ladders to reach him.

Giddens was finally freed shortly after 8:30 p.m. and subsequently airlifted to a trauma centre, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Fortunately, updates suggest he is on the road to recovery.

In a statement following the incident, officials from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office noted that no charges would be pursued against Giddens at this time, citing concerns for his mental well-being. “We hope that he is able to recover from his ordeal, both physically and mentally,” they remarked.

Vulcan Sand Plant staff expressed their relief at Giddens’ safe recovery, indicating that the situation was handled with “care and compassion.” They praised the first responders for their efforts in what could have been a tragic outcome.
