Amy Beethe, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist, was shocked to discover that the young boy would be facing such a significant procedure without any family member or guardian by his side. “He was sitting there all alone, and it just kind of took me aback that this 4-year-old was going to be undergoing heart surgery and just no one was there,” she recounted, noting that True’s caseworker had contracted COVID-19 and was unable to accompany him.
Over the course of True’s hospital stay, Amy felt a deep connection to him. After his surgery, she and her husband, Ryan, decided to meet him, and it didn’t take long for them to form a bond. “We went up and met True in the hospital, and it didn’t take long to fall in love with him and know that we needed him in our family,” Ryan stated.
